This programme trains you in the theory and methods of social statistics, exposing you to cutting-edge social statistical practice, to equip and prepare you for carrying out research in social science disciplines and to contribute to developments in the area. It has a particular focus on statistical methodology and the underlying theory, equipping you with the skills to undertake research in social statistics methodology or to take up a career as a professional social statistician.

The programme is recognised by the ESRC as satisfying postgraduate training course requirements. You register initially on the PG Dip and, depending on your success and requirements, can continue to work towards the MSc. The pathway meets the training needs of postgraduate researchers in social statistics methodology.

We welcome applications from students who have, or expect to have, a second-class honours degree involving a substantial statistical theory component as outlined below.Your application will be considered on its merits, with motivation and postgraduate experience in a statistical environment potentially important factors.Non-graduate qualifications, in particular the Graduate Diploma of the Royal Statistical Society, may be accepted in place of an undergraduate degree. Full details of previous statistical training in the form of syllabuses, reading lists and, in particular, examination papers will be helpful in assessing your suitability for the programme.Academic backgroundThis pathway is suitable for statisticians, mathematicians, econometricians, engineers and other science graduates whose training equips them to study applied statistics at graduate level.
