This programme trains you in the theory and methods of social statistics, exposing you to cutting-edge social statistical practice, to equip and prepare you for carrying out research in social science disciplines and to contribute to developments in the area. It has a particular focus on statistical methodology and the underlying theory, equipping you with the skills to undertake research in social statistics methodology or to take up a career as a professional social statistician.
The programme is recognised by the ESRC as satisfying postgraduate training course requirements. You register initially on the PG Dip and, depending on your success and requirements, can continue to work towards the MSc. The pathway meets the training needs of postgraduate researchers in social statistics methodology.
Compulsory modules: Generalised linear models; Modelling longitudinal data; Modelling multilevel data; Multivariate analysis; Research skills, strategy and design; Social science data: sources and measurement; Survey methods 1 and 2
Optional modules: Bayesian methods; Computer intensive statistical methods; Demographic methods 1 and 2; Design of experiments; Epidemiological methods; Introductory qualitative methods; Measurement errors; Population, poverty and policy; Survival analysis; Understanding population change
