The MSc in Speech and Language Therapy (Professional Qualification) is offered in the School of Health Science over two years full-time as a route to qualification for professional practice for applicants who have already attained a degree. The programme has approval from the Irish Association of Speech and Language Therapists.

The Master of Science degree will be undertaken through an intensive programme of full-time study involving academic and placement modules over two years including summer study periods. Placement components form a cornerstone of studies in Speech and Language Therapy and are undertaken via weekly placements and a full-time block placement.

Objectives

* Provide graduate entry studies in the clinical health science specialty of Speech & Language Therapy to suitable applicants.
* Prepare scientifically qualified practitioners who are ready to enter the challenging professional field of Speech & Language Therapy.
* Develop and maintain high quality clinical science research and teaching in the specialist field of Speech & Language Therapy at the University of Limerick.

Careers

Graduates will be eligible to practice in Ireland and for registration in other parts of the world. You will be able to work in a diverse range of environments including schools, hospitals and community settings.

The programme is run over two years on an intensive study basis. Some placement components will be completed through a full-time block placement in Ireland or abroad and some placement will be conducted through weekly visits.

Developmental speech disorders, Linguistics for speech language therapy 1, Voice and oncology disorders, Pre-school developmental language disorders, Introduction to human anatomy and physiology, Clinical practice 1.

Semester 2

School-age developmental language disorders, Acquired neurological speech and language disorders 1, Linguistics for speech-language therapy 2, Speech language therapy project 1, Human anatomy associated with speech and hearing, Clinical practice 2.

Semester 3

People with additional needs, Acquired neurological speech and language disorders 2, Speech and language therapy project 2, Cognitive Psychology & Psycholinguistics, Clinical practice 4.

Semester 4

Fluency & abnormal and social psychology, Eating, drinking and swallowing disorders, Clinical practice 5, Speech and language therapy project 3.

Applicants must have attained an award of at least 2.2 in their undergraduate degree.Applicants invited for interview must be able to demonstrate appropriate interest in and knowledge of the professional field of Speech and Language Therapy.
