Structural Engineering is the science and art of designing civil engineering facilities so that they can safely resist the forces to which they may be subjected. All structures from bridges to buildings, harbours to airports, must be able to meet these requirements. Structural Engineers aim to design these structures with safety, economy and elegance.

The programme of study is designed to progress your qualifications in the following ways:

* Deepen your technical knowledge, skills and competences in the specialised field of Structural Engineering
* Prepare you to undertake the Institution of Structural Engineers Professional Practice
* Examinations by developing your structural analysis and design skills to an appropriate level
* Extend your educational qualifications to a level likely to be that required for Chartered Engineer
* Develop your ability to carry out in depth research in a chosen field of Engineering, to draw conclusions from the research and present research findings
* Broaden your knowledge in other areas such as Sustainability, Management, and Business

From 2012, Engineers Ireland will require graduates to have an accredited Level 9 (Masters) qualification, or equivalent, to meet the educational standards required of a Chartered Engineer. It is intended that this programme will, in due course, be submitted to Engineers Ireland for accreditation.

In recent times significant employment opportunities for structural engineers in Ireland were filled by international graduates with Masters level qualifications. Graduates of this programme will have skills, competences and a higher qualification to enhance their employment credentials in the national and international market.

The learning experience involves a variety of modes, including classroom based lectures, individual and group project work, tutorials, seminars and presentations by visiting experts. A Research Dissertation is completed by each student during Semester 3.

Students who are available to attend part-time by day may take modules on a phased basis and achieve the programme qualification over a number of academic years.

The Masters of Engineering in Structural Engineering programme aims to develop advanced analytical, design and research skills in Structural Engineering. Graduates of this programme will be well equipped to meet the challenges of the modern Structural Engineering industry, providing and protecting the physical infrastructure that underpins society; in this context a broad range of infrastructure is addressed.

The programme covers both the theoretical background and the practical design considerations of Structural Engineering. The content seeks to reflect current and future practice in structural analysis, design, appraisal, experimental techniques and information technology. It aims to provide the graduate with the advanced conceptual understanding, detailed factual knowledge, and specialist technical skills that are required for success in Structural Engineering.

The elective options afford the opportunity for the development of skills and competences in a range of additional and associated disciplines. Following a period of appropriate professional experience, the graduates of the programme will have the skills and competencies appropriate to achieving full membership of The Institution of Structural Engineers.

Applicants should hold a minimum of a Second Class Honours Grade 2 in a professionally accredited Level 8 Honours Degree Programme in Civil or Structural Engineering. Equivalent recognition may be given through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process on an individual case-by-case basis to candidates who have not achieved this academic standard but who can demonstrate significant relevant professional experience in the discipline of Structural Engineering.

There are a number of funding schemes for postgraduate students. The majority of these are external schemes and the competition is open to both the Institutes of Technology and the Universities. The following are details on some of the funding opportunities that arise throughout the year. Where possible, links are given for further information on the schemes.

CIT Postgraduate Research Scholarships
The CIT Postgraduate Scholarship scheme is an internal competition concerned with (a) fostering research across all Departments in the College and (b) rewarding academic excellence by allowing high achieving students the opportunity to pursue higher a degree at the Masters and Doctoral levels, at CIT.

Strand I - Department of Education and Science
The Post-Graduate R&D Skills Training Programme is concerned with the provision of research and development training for highly skilled graduates leading to the award of a Masters degree. The provision of high quality R&D training is the primary objective. The scheme covers all disciplines and a member of staff makes the application. Once a project is funded the supervisor must advertise and conduct interviews to fill the position.

Under this scheme fees, materials and travel is covered and the student is paid a monthly stipend for the duration of the project.

O'Reilly Foundation

The O'Reilly Foundation sponsors scholars to undertake post-graduate education in their chosen field and in an institution or university of their choice. O'Reilly Scholars are individuals who have an excellent academic record and have demonstrated leadership qualities, as well as the potential and desire to make a significant contribution to the future of Ireland. For further information please see:
Fulbright Commission Awards

The Irish - US Fulbright Commission's annual Awards Programme enables students and scholars to undertake study, research or lecturing at a college in the United States. Applicants must be in a position to outline a clearly defined course of study or research and must obtain their own placements in the US. All Fulbright awards are for one year. However, students pursuing post-graduate degrees will normally retain their Fulbright visa status in the US for the full duration of their studies. For further information please see:
Embark Scholarships

The Embark Initiative's Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology. For further information please see:
Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS)

IRCHSS funds cutting-edge research in the humanities, social sciences, business and law with the objective of creating new knowledge and expertise beneficial to Ireland's economic, social and cultural development. Through its membership of the European Science Foundation, the Research Council is committed to integrating Irish research in European and international networks of expertise. For further information please see:
Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET)

The Embark Initiative operated by the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology. Funded by the State under the National Development Plan, the Embark Initiative is aimed at knowledge creation for the long-term benefit of society and the economy. Embark takes a unique approach to funding people and ideas, providing direct financial support for researchers & research students. Its programmes does not target research projects with an industrial or economic focus but instead aim to support researchers in exploring ideas and bringing vision to reality. The emphasis is on innovative, original and exploratory research, aimed at generating new knowledge and energising Ireland's future growth, development and national competitiveness.
