The content of the Bachelor’s programme has been designed to give you many different study and career paths after graduation. Studies in the programme majors, Mathematics, Physics and Information and Communications Technology, provide the students with a deep background in science and information and communications technology. Graduates with the Bachelor of Science in Technology degree are eligible to continue studies directly at the Master’s level at TUT. With the decisions you make during the Bachelor’s studies, you will actively form the focus of your future studies and career.

Studies in the programme may eventually lead you to work as an R & D engineer in industry, as a software specialist with the newest technologies, carry out data analysis for an insurance company or research for universities or the industry – maybe even to establish your own start-up with a ground-breaking idea!

Company cases and real-life examples will connect theory to practice. Internship possibilities already exist for the first-year students. For a research-oriented student, it is possible to gain experience already during the Bachelor’s studies by working in one of the research groups on real-life projects.

Independence and initiative are traits of University-level studies, especially in Finland and TUT. Students may choose their study paths according to their own interests and professional goals.

The introductory courses

The introductory courses lead you into studies at University-level and in Finland, familiarise you with various themes and tools which are central to your Bachelor’s studies at TUT, and to plan your career after graduation. During the first year, special emphasis is put on intecultural communication skills and working as part of a multicultural team.

The core studies

In core studies, you will take courses in subjects which are essential basics for all engineering students, regardless of their major subject. With these studies, you will gain subject-specific knowledge necessary for more advanced studies as well as skills in analytical thinking, understanding causes and consequences and problem solving. Core studies include mathematics, physics, chemistry, industrial management, programming, information technology, scientific writing and languages. The content of your language studies will depend on the language of your prior studies and will be tailored to your specific background. For all international students, studies in the English and Finnish languages are included in the core studies.

Major and minor subject studies

After the core studies, you will move onto major and minor subject studies. From among the three possible major subjects: Mathematics, Physics, and Information and Communications Technology, you will choose two. Of these two, the subject on which you will write your Bachelor’s thesis will be your major subject. You will decide which two study modules you wish to include in your degree in the spring semester of your first year of studies. The choice of major subject will be made during the second year of studies.

In addition to these two subjects you will study a second minor subject module, which you may choose freely from among the minor subjects taught in English. For the students with sufficient knowledge of the Finnish language, it is also possible to study the minor subject in Finnish. For an active and curious student, a minor subject study module completed as an exchange student at another top university of technology may also be a relevant option!

Mathematics

Mathematics is an essential tool in natural science, engineering, medicine, finance and the social sciences. Applied mathematics, concerned with the application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires new mathematical discoveries. Mathematical structures explain real-life phenomena and mathematical reasoning can provide an insight or predictions about nature. Abstraction and logic are the main ingredients of modern mathematics.

Bachelor’s studies in mathematics at TUT provide a strong foundation in all the key areas of mathematics, as well as analytical thinking. Instruction is integrated into research, including topics such as mathematical analysis and system theory with application, generalised and applied logics and Big Data data mining. Career prospects for major subject students of mathematics include research and development in industry, academic research or teaching.

Physics

Physics is one of the most fundamental scientific disciplines that aims at understanding the consistency and laws of the universe. Physics also forms the scientific backbone of technological development. Therefore, applications of physics can be found in all fields of technology from nanoscience to medical devices, as well as atmospheric and space research.

As a major subject of study, physics is a rewarding intellectual challenge: skills in physics are highly valued in the job market. A background in physics typically indicates strong abilities to tackle complex problems in diverse fields that range beyond science and technology to for example economics, banking and consulting. The recent “Big Data Revolution” in our society has dramatically increased the need of physicists. In the next years to come, physicists with skills in data analysis will be among the most desired employees in the job market worldwide.

After a successful completion of the Bachelor's courses and thesis, the programme provides a jump start towards Masters studies at TUT with a specialisation in research areas including for example physics of global atmospheric change and emission processes, quantum technologies, nanomaterials and nanoparticles, advanced optical materials and techniques, and multidisciplinary problems in health tracking and economics. Furthermore, the research groups provide the best students with excellent opportunities to continue towards Ph.D. either at TUT or elsewhere. Typically, our graduates (with either M.Sc. or Ph.D.) are quickly employed in highly-valued positions in the international job market.

Information and Communications Technology

The modern society could not function without Information and Communications Technology (ICT). It is a part of a modern society at many levels: games and art, intelligent software and robots, communication between equipment and people, medical measuring and imaging equipment, social interaction and electronic commerce, The Internet of Things, Big Data, 5G mobile networks and cloud computing are examples of current ICT research topics in Tampere University of Technology.

The study module on ICT offers a wide knowledge on the technology behind these topics, including software, human-computer interaction, signal processing and communications technology. The combination of courses may be selected quite freely. In ICT studies, theory and practice are in continuous interaction. Teaching is multifaceted: lectures, laboratory work and various assignments will provide a comprehensive learning experience. Depending on the selected courses, studies can be continued at the Master’s level at TUT in several majors, for example, software systems, wireless communications, machine learning, and computer networking.

Graduates from TUT's Master's programmes in ICT have excellent career opportunities in, for example, R&D in high-tech companies as well as research and post-graduate studies in universities.

Eligible applicants hold an upper secondary education certificate - the Finnish matriculation examination, the International Baccalaureate, the European Baccalaureate, Reifeprüfung or any other comparable upper secondary educational qualification which provides eligibility to University-level Bachelor’s studies in the country in question. Applicants who are in the final semester of their upper secondary education are also eligible to apply.

The level of the applicants’ studies in mathematics should be equal to that of the advanced syllabus in mathematics in the Finnish general upper secondary school. For more information, please see the National Core Curriculum for General Upper Secondary Education Intended for Young People.

It is not possible to apply to a Bachelor’s degree programme on the basis of a Bachelor’s degree.

Applicants are required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. TUT accepts internationally recognised academic language tests as demonstration of language proficiency. The accepted tests are IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT, PTE Academic and CAE/CPE.

Finland is known for its high-quality education and here at TUT we put this reputation to practice. TUT is investing in new and innovative learning environments and encouraging the use of new technological solutions to develop the quality of teaching and learning even further. Course implementations are reviewed annually, based on feedback from students on each course they take. Many members of teaching staff at TUT also have studies in university pedagogics, so in addition to research merits they are also qualified teachers.

In TUT, you will enjoy a variety of different teaching methods. Courses often consist of a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory work, tutorials, group work, assignments, independent study and an examination. In the TUT campus area, facilities such as computer labs and a library are available for the use of all students 24/7. Studying at TUT is independent, yet communal. In addition to theoretical and analytical skills, you will also learn to work independently and be responsible for your own studies on the one hand, and to work and communicate in a multicultural group on the other.

The academic year at TUT begins in mid-August and ends in late May. At the start of their first semester at TUT, new students attend a week-long orientation. The purpose of the orientation is to familiarise students with the practicalities of living in Finland and studying at TUT and with the facilities available on campus. Each new student will have a senior student as a tutor who will provide help in settling in to Tampere and TUT.
