This two-year program is designed to provide the understanding on the connection between the composition and the quality and functions of food. The program provides education and training for the competence for working in the research and development food industry and for continuation in research in the various fields of food sciences. The courses are jointly organized by Food Development Discipline of the Technical Degree Program of Biotechnology and the Food Chemistry Discipline of the Master's Degree Program of Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry.

The curricula of the Faculty are confirmed every second year in spring. As this is a new Master's Degree Programme, the curriculum published is preliminary and will be confirmed in April 2014 for the academic years 2014-2016.

General degree requirement:A BSc degree that formally qualifies the applicant to access Master-level studies in the country where it has been completed. This degree should correspond to at least 180 ECTS (European credits) or to a minimum of three years of full-time study. It should be awarded by a full university (i.e. an institution of higher education offering a doctorate).ORA polytechnic degree from an ammattikorkeakoulu institution in Finland, which in combination with additional studies that the student will be required to complete while studying for the Master's Degree (see Additional studies below) and possible work experience can be considered to qualify the applicant for Master's Degree studies. Applicants seeking admission on the basis of a degree from ammattikorkeakoulu institution in Finland should note the language requirement concerning the Finnish language. Programme-specific degree requirements:The applicant's previous degree on the basis of which s/he is seeking admission to the Master's Degree Programme should be in a relevant field of study. Relevant fields of previous studies for this Master's Degree Programme are Food Sciences, Food Technology, Food Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Agricultural and/or Biosciences where sufficient knowledge in food sciences, polytechnic/engineering, and/or biosciences is achieved. The decision for admission will be based on the relevance of the applicant's previous degree(s); the amount, relevance and grades of the courses in the degree(s); language test result (see Language requirements) and the motivation letter. A previously earned Master's degree does not automatically place the applicant ahead of other applicants. There are no tuition fees for students studying in the MDP in Food Development. However, please notice that the students are responsible for covering the costs of living themselves as the University of Turku does not offer scholarships or other financial assistance to its students. For the Finnish Immigration Service to grant a student residence permit for Finland the student is required to prove his/her means of support (6720 Euros/year).
