The term 'Training and Development' describes the intersection of adult education and training with individual and organisational development. As such, this hybrid-type course provides cross-disciplinary expertise in the fields of education and business. Emphasis is placed on providing workplace trainers and developers with new tools to enhance professional development with increased managerial responsibilities.
The UNE Bachelor of Training and Development has been designed to provide the cross-disciplinary expertise required by workplace trainers, supervisors and HR staff with system level responsibilities or who are seeking to move into such positions.
This course recognises your professional background by giving you full credit for your previous studies, training and work experience and helping you take the step into tertiary education. The UNE Bachelor of Training and Development aims to link training concerns with leadership and organisational development and to facilitate the effectiveness of individual trainers in a workplace environment. It also includes an advanced academic skills unit that helps students refine their writing and information literacy skills for tertiary study.

Course Aims
The aim of this course helps you to identify the training needs and requirements of individuals in organisations. It explores the learning and development needs of an organisation, the business of organisational training and development and provides assistance with the relevant design and development of training and development programs for face-to-face and online instructional delivery.

The Bachelor of Training and Development prepares professionals in the fields of adult and vocational education to refine their skills in facilitating training and development for capacity-building purposes and applying theoretical knowledge to profession-specific application.
Communication Skills
Communication skills are tailored to promote flexibility in working with adult learners. Communication of information may include essay assignments, practical reports and/or action-based projects which include reflective practice. Students will be given advice on how to write these and they will be assessed.
Global Perspectives
Students will be required to understand and analyse developments in global systems of workplace training in other parts of the world. They will be assessed on this understanding in the assignments undertaken. They will also be asked to apply this understanding to their workplace in a journal of reflective practice.
Information Literacy
Students will be assessed on their skills in obtaining appropriate information for the written assignments and reports, using books, journals and online sources. They will need to discern scholarly knowledge from other forms of information sources and may, in some units, be required to develop their own resources (e.g. curriculum design, action-based learning) for practical application.
Life-Long Learning
The education received in this course is all about lifelong learning. In particular, it is aimed to inform adult learners about the art and wonderment of education as a continuous learning process. Students are taught a range of lifelong teaching and learning skills, assessed on how to seek new information and to critically analyse and refect upon such information. The business-school approach applies the concept of lifelong learning to the continuous learning cycle of the organisation.
Problem Solving
This course provides the opportunity for professionals to refine their skills in training and development. A strong emphasis is placed on reflective praxis. Students are taught the relevant skills to determine training and development needs and how to apply appropriate measures. Problem solving skills will be assessed in written assignments and self-assessments.
Social Responsibility
Students are taught about the needs of professionalism, ethics, the maturation of the workforce and corporate responsibility and sustainability. Students learn to value the diversity of the workforce, the enriching qualities of human agency, and the need to act decisively on social and cultural issues that may discriminate, marginalise, harm or denegrate a peoples, race, nation or culture.
Team Work
The practices of the Bachelor of Training and Development are developed to promote team-based approaches to improve outcomes and to encourage lateral, strategic thinking for the betterment of the organisation. Students will learn to apply appropriate training and development techniques to improve team performance and organisational effectiveness.
Requirements
A candidate shall:
(a) hold a qualification requiring the equivalent of two years' full-time study approved by the school; or
(b) hold other academic or professional qualifications or be able to demonstrate experiential learning considered by the school to be equivalent.
Additional Requirements
The course is designed for entry at 3rd year level on the basis of industry training, qualifications, workplace experience and formal studies. The admission guidelines are: one year of full-time study or equivalent at a recognised institution = 1 year; two years of full-time study or equivalent at a recognised institution = 2 years; Certificate IV (AQF 4) = 0.5 year; Diploma (AQF 5) eg Frontline Management = 1 year; five or more years relevant work experience = 0.5 year; two or more years training adults experience on top of previous five years work experience (ie minimum seven years) = 1 year; Industry and/or VET-system accredited trade or paraprofessional qualification = full-time duration.
