To be accepted into the masters programme in Mathematics, you need to complete a relevant bachelor degree.
With a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Southern Denmark, you will be well qualified for many exciting jobs in private or public organizations (industry, financial institutions, schools, universities, administration) or you may choose to pursue a research career.
In the masters programme in Mathematics, you develop your knwoledge of scientific theories and methods, your experience in working independently with scientific questions and your ability to express yourself clearly on academic issues. The masters programme thus qualifies you to participate in scientific work and independently handle business functions with your background in these learned skills.
Mathematics and computer science research
Research in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Southern Denmark covers three core areas:
* Applied mathematics
* Computer science
Within the field of Mathematics, it is especially the fields of operator algebra, banach spaces, topology, geometry, discrete maths and graph theory which are researched at the department.

For more than two millenia, the study of mathematics has developed through a marriage of abstraction and application.Some mathematical theories and techniques are developed directly intended for problem solving in other areas of study, such as astronomy, physics, chemistry, statistics, computer science, economy and technology. Others however are derived from the mathematicians interest in abstraction and in the inner structure of the field and its aesthetic values.
The expression the unreasonable usefulness of mathematics exists because it has been shown, time and again, that the sometimes very abstract thought constructions mathematicians create in this manner without utility in mind, later prove to be especially useful in other subjects. One example is numbers theory which forms the basis for cryptology.
Research in Mathematics at University of Southern Denmark
In the mathematical field, research is done in a range of areas within the Department of Mathematics and Computer science:
Geometry and topology
The primary areas of research are geometries with torsion, moment maps, harmonic maps and integrable systems. The geometry group is closely associated to the high-energy physics group at the University of Southern Denmark, and workshops and seminars and courses are often aimed at both mathematicians and physicists.
Operator algebra and banach spaces
The research in operator algebra theory covers both von Neumann algebras and C*-algebras. The theory of operator algebras has today many fruitful interrelations with other areas of mathematics and physics, with applications to for example knot theory, non-commutative geometry and quantum groups.
Discrete mathematics and graph theory
The research is done in close collaboration with Computer Science. Areas covered are for example graph colouring theory, extremal graph theory, directed graphs, network flows, scheduling problems, algorithms and complexity theory.
Mathematics with a research profile
In the masters programme in Mathematics with a research profile, you get the opportunity to immerse yourself in current issues and complete your own research projects. The programme will provide you with a good basis for handling complex problems which are relevant in many different careers.
Graduates who have completed this master programme are entitled to use the title of Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics.
A complete study environment
As a student at University of Southern Denmark, you become part of a study environment we call Living Science. But a university programme is much more than courses, classes and lectures. The most common way to finish your degree in Mathematics is a master and thus the title of MSc.
The scientific aspect of the masters programme is most evident in the final thesis project which takes 6 months. Work on this project takes place in close contact with a supervisor and often in connection with the supervisors own research. It should be made clear, however, that the masters degree is not a research degree. To achieve a research degree, you must complete a PhD.
If your desire and abilities suffice, you can choose to apply for a research degree. This can be either as a 3-year programme following the masters programme or as a 4-year programme beginning a year after the bachelor programme. The research programme leads to a PhD in science.

Scholarships and tuition fee waivers are available for highly talented students who have been admitted to a range of programmes.

The board of the University of Southern Denmark decides from year to year which study programmes will benefit from the scholarships and the University will recommend the most qualified applicants in these programmes for a scholarship. Therefore it is not possible to apply for this scholarship. If you are a non-EU student and applying for a programme which offers this scholarship you will automatically be considered for it.
Only available for students applying for a master programme at our Sønderborg Campus
Six one-year scholarships are issued pr. year: three for studies within the technical field i.e. Mechatronics and Innovation & Business respectively, and three are for studies within the field of business administration i.e. Business Relationship Management.
A scholarship of DKK 40.000 may be granted if and when the requirements are met. It is paid in two instalments of DKK 20.000 per semester. The scholarship grant depends on acceptance and enrolment as a full-time student in one of the above mentioned programmes.
