The baroque period saw the development of the contemporary bassoon from the bassoon, which has just a few keys and retains a classic tone. It was the most typical woodwind low-pitched instrument, equaling the German-style bassoon until the 19th century. The richness of its distinctive delicate and expressive tone continues to make it beloved throughout France, despite its challenging tuning and low loudness.
About program
Beyond baccalaureate-level achievement, bassoon performance degrees foster the development of expertise. Students take courses outside of their major that promote their advanced musical and academic growth while specializing in the study of their primary instrument. Students receive individualized instruction from qualified artist-teachers and have the chance to perform in a variety of big-band and chamber ensembles.
You will be a part of a department that will train you for a variety of careers in chamber music performance, orchestral performance, and/or teaching as a bassoon student. Students who play the bassoon take part in solo recitals, chamber music ensembles, big ensemble performances, and specialized workshops to prepare for performances using particular repertoire.
In order to achieve expressive musicianship, a calm and fluid technique is seen to be a prerequisite. Students are required to uphold a strict practice regimen in which they seek to advance their technical proficiency on their instrument. In addition to providing you with extensive exposure to and experience in a range of performance venues, studying bassoon will also provide you with targeted, rigorous training for careers in education, performance, and research.
