Logic is the study of formal and informal thinking. Originally a branch of philosophy, logic has also become a mathematical discipline, a tool of modern linguistics, the core of computer science and the subject of study of psychologists and cognitive scientists of any profile. Currently, this field includes almost all aspects of human (and non-human) thinking. The study of logic develops students' thinking abilities, analytical reading and writing skills, oral discussion skills, understanding of the structure of language and thinking, as well as the structure of abstract formal systems. Logic is an excellent basis not only for studying philosophy, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, but also for such disciplines as law, public administration, economics.
Logic is an interdisciplinary academic program that is based on the central role of logic as mediator between the sciences and the humanities. Educational programs in Logic is an excellent research training program. The main career focus of this degree’s graduates is the international logical research community.
Logical thinking plays an important role in most areas of human activity. Logic has been one of the main branches of philosophy since the time of Aristotle; revolution of mathematics’ foundations in the 20th century took place thanks to logic bases and it has been called "computing", and it has applications in many fields. Logic has also played an important role in the study of language and reason and formed the basis of formal semantics in linguistics and machine thinking in artificial intelligence. Thanks to these interdisciplinary connections, logic acts as a bridge between the humanities and STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The study of logic develops students' ability to think and reason strictly, read and write analytically, distinguish patterns between complexities and understand abstract structures. Junior course in Logic is also available and consists of three main courses in symbolic logic, which can be studied in parallel within the framework of philosophy or mathematics.
Logic is a relatively new educational program but nowadays this degree is a major study program in universities around the world. Academic programs in Logic are based in philosophy or mathematics departments. Therefore, students prepare coursework in these two fields, philosophy or mathematics, and include the introduction and history of philosophy, human nature, modal logic, ethics and more. Mathematics department includes courses in math theory and probabilities, philosophy one offers classes in philosophical theories, law, ethics, and morality.
There is a wide range of career opportunities with a Logic Degree. Usually graduates in logic work as teachers at the college level but other options also are available: child psychologist, college professor, statistician, sociologist, theology. Many graduates conduct research in academic or industrial contexts, work in the areas of publishing or journalism, or find themselves in the software industry and management consulting.
