The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen - THM (University of Applied Sciences) was formerly known as the Fachhochschule Giessen-Friedberg. It is renowned for future-oriented degree programmes in economic and technical sciences. "Innovation based on tradition" is our motto. The Fachhochschule was founded in 1971. However, its roots reach back to the 19th and early 20th century, when schools of engineering were established in both cities. Today, the main fields of study are economic and technical sciences. Classical disciplines such as civil engineering, electrical or mechanical engineering are offered alongside progressive programmes like energy systems, biotechnology, media engineering, business administration and computer science. We constantly work on our curriculum by setting up new study programmes and updating the established programmes to meet the requirements of a modern industrial society. Currently we implement Bachelor's and Master's degrees in all departments. In a few years, they will eventually replace the current "Diplom" degrees and thereby support the internationalisation of studies. Increasing student numbers (currently around 16,000, including approx. 14% international students) reflect the attractiveness of our more than 70 degree programmes. Furthermore, the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen attaches great importance to the integration of practical elements into the study programmes. There are three campuses: one in Giessen, one in Friedberg and one in Wetzlar. We are located just north of Frankfurt/Main. For blind and visually handicapped students, our university has a special centre (BLiZ) to guide and support them through the study programme of their choice. Young parents can rely on our childcare offers which help to harmonise family and student life.

Friedberg is a historic town about 30 minutes north of Frankfurt am Main with a population of approximately 28,000 inhabitants. The city is part of the pulsating and prosperous Rhine-Main region - a central European area served by the Frankfurt/Main International Airport and many main European train lines. The city of Giessen is situated in the Rhine-Main area close to the economic centre of Frankfurt. The location combines the amenities of a mid-sized town with a good infrastructure and a wonderful landscape just outside the city. A vibrant cultural scene, a variety of restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, small and medium-sized enterprises in various business sectors and good shopping facilities offer an excellent atmosphere in which to study, work and live. Hiking, cycling and swimming are just a few of the possibilities of experiencing the beauties in and around the city. Giessen has about 79,500 inhabitants. The student-population ratio is one of the highest in Germany (approx. 50%). The lively student scene can be seen and experienced everywhere in town.

We are known for the support we give to new students (finding a room, support on the day of arrival and for enrolment, help with opening a bank account, registering at City Hall, making an appointment at the Immigration Office, subscribing to health insurance, learning about public transport and about shopping in Germany, etc.).
