About university

The University of Economics, Prague (Czech: Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze, abbreviated VŠE, also called Prague School of Economics) is a leading economics and business-oriented public university located in Prague, Czech Republic. It is the largest and most selective university in the field of economics, business and information technologies in the Czech Republic with almost 20,000 students in its bachelor, masters and doctoral programmes, and a top business school in Central Europe.

 

  • The Faculty of Management

    This faculty is the only faculty of the University of Economics in Prague located outside of the capital. It offers modular designed education in every level of university education in the branches of Economics and Management.

History

In 1919 Vysoká škola obchodní ("Business School") was established as a department of the Czech Technical University in Prague. It specialized in wholesale trade, banking and the organization of industrial companies. In 1949 the Vysoká škola politických a hospodářských věd (University of Political and Economic Sciences) was established, which was finally renamed the University of Economics in 1953. The University underwent a significant reform in 1989 after the Velvet Revolution.

Rankings and Accreditation

In its first international ranking in 2010 (by the Financial Times), the University of Economics in Prague was awarded the 73rd place among Business Schools in selection, thesecond highest in the Post-Communist European countries.

At Eduniversal awards in 2008, the University of Economics in Prague received the title '1st Business School in the Eastern European Zone', becoming one of the top 27 business schools in the world. Other regional winners were Harvard Business School, Melbourne Business School and University of Singapore. The ranking was based on a survey among deans of 1 000 business schools from 153 countries.

The university is a member of CEMS (Global Alliance in Management Education), APSIA (Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs), and PIM(Partnership in International Management) networks.

Student life

Living costs in the Czech Republic are the most budget (about 750 euros per month), including meals, accommodation, public transport and cultural activities.

Why studying here?

Many significant Czech and foreign economists have obtained the university’s honoris causa title;these include, for instance, the Nobel Prize winners Prof. Robert A. Mundell, Prof. Milton Friedman, or Prof. Gary S. Becker. The classes taught at VŠE are guaranteed and provided by more than 700 qualified academics and business experts. Besides the specialized courses, VŠE stresses foreign language studies. VŠE students can take classes of English, German, French, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Chinese.

VŠE provides its students with a high quality study environment and conditions. The university library contains more than 430 thousand books and 330 journals and provides access to numerous electronic databases with e-journals and periodicals on a broad range of topics. Students may use hundreds of computer stations on campus, a wireless network, or the modern Integrated Study Information System (ISIS). For students who do not come from Prague, there are almost 4,500 beds available at the university’s dormitory facilities.

The university has its own sports facilities. Students may use the modern, multipurpose sports arena which was opened in 2009. The gym has a surface of 1,400 m2 and is sufficient for three volleyball or two basketball courts, handball, floor ball, indoor football, and other sports. There is an artificial climbing wall and a rehabilitation exercise room. At the dormitory facility area, there is an artificial turf football field. Summer and winter sports courses are organized too.

VŠE supports many student activities. Examples of these activities include a choir, a chamber orchestra, a folklore group, a film club, a theatre group, and student journals. International student organizations are present and there is a wide-range of interest associations at VŠE too.
