With globalization and other market forces adding ever more complexity to decision-making within business and economics, the need for mathematical models and statistics to solve everyday problems is rapidly increasing. You will be the one to provide them with a Bachelor of Science Econometrics and Operations Research (EOR).

The three-year BSc Econometrics and Operations Research (EOR) is a fundamentally quantitative program for ambitious students with an aptitude for mathematics, logic and analytical thinking. Learning focuses on understanding how to formulate mathematical and statistical models in relation to problems in economics and business, and using and applying these models to real business issues to actualise effective solutions.

Your ability to apply these models to problems related to issues around, for example, production planning, inventory management, investment, insurance and retirement will be invaluable in organizations worldwide. Economics, statistics and mathematics are the key ingredients of this program and should be your primary academic interests.

Course Content

In the first and second year of the BSc program Econometrics and Operations Research, a general program is offered with courses that are necessary to achieve the objectives of this BSc program. In the third year, students can specialise towards one of the three possible MSc programs that are based on the BSc Econometrics & OR.

Year 1

The first year of the program consists of ten compulsory courses. Lectures are given in four units of seven weeks each, each unit followed by one or two weeks of exams. Five of these ten courses provide a solid mathematical and statistical basis (Mathematical Analysis 1 and 2, Linear Algebra, Introduction Analysis and Probability and Probability and Statistics) and the other five courses focus on subjects in economics and business (Macro-economics, Micro-economics, Linear Optimization, Introduction Econometrics and Introduction Finance and Actuarial Science).

Year 2

The second year of the program consists of ten compulsory courses in total. Lectures are given in two semesters of 14 weeks. Besides the mathematical and statistical courses (Advanced Linear Algebra, Differentiation and Integration Theory, Statistics for Econometrics and Computer Programming for EOR) there is room for a number of courses that provide an orientation for the quantitative Master's programs at Tilburg University. (Stochastis OR Models, Introduction Mathematical Economics, Finance, Econometrics and the course Modeling in Practice, where you learn to analyze and solve practical research problems and to report, discuss, and present the obtained results.)

Year 3

In this year you have to choose between courses in the field of Econometrics and Mathematical Economics (Auctions, Bargaining and Networks, Game and Economics Behavior, Computational Aspects in Econometrics), in the field of Operations Research and Management Science (Combinatorial Optimization, Inventory and Production Management, Operations Research Methods ) and in the field of Quantitative Finance and Actuarial Science (Life Insurance, Quantitative Finance and Risk Theory). Besides these main courses there is room for two electives and you have to write a Bachelor's thesis. Furthermore the course Philosophy of Science for ECO is compulsory. Once you have been awarded a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Econometrics & OR, you may enter one of the one-year Master's programs at Tilburg University.

With non-Dutch diploma

You are eligible to apply for the Economics program if you have one of the following diplomas:

• An International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, including Mathematics Higher Level. With an IB diploma including English and Mathematics Higher Level, there are no extra tests required, or
• A European Baccalaureate (EB) diploma, including Mathematics (5 hrs). With an EB diploma including English and Mathematics (5 hrs), there are no extra tests required, or
• Another secondary or high school diploma that equals the Dutch VWO diploma, including English and Mathematics for which you have successfully passed or will pass the exam. For example, the German Abitur, or
• A + O levels (3 A-levels), including Mathematics A level, or
• 4 Advanced Placement subjects, including AP Math/Science.

English Language requirements

In addition, you may have to demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Mathematics and English. Proficiency in English can be demonstrated by taking either a TOEFL or an IELTS test. The required minimum score for TOEFL is 550 (paper based) or 213 (computer based) or 80 (internet based); for IELTS 6.0. The institutional code for TOEFL is 9860.

Mathematics Requirements

Mathematics is a required course. This means that even if you have a recognised diploma, you must be able to prove that you have a sufficient level of Mathematics. In some cases, the Admission Board might require you to participate in an entrance examination in Mathematics, called Colloquium Doctum.
