The Master's Programme in Physics is intended for students with a keen interest in either the theoretical or experimental aspects of frontline physics and astronomy. It is possible to specialize in theoretical and/or experimental aspects of particle physics, subatomic physics or astrophysics.
Understanding the basic laws of physics has been a fascinating problem since the birth of modern science. It is of great intrinsic interest and also forms the basis of other branches of science. Trying to probe the smallest structures of matter and the largest structures of the Universe also drives the development of new technologies.
The skills in problem solving and advanced experimental techniques, as well as collaboration and presentation skills, acquired in this program are highly valued both in the academic world and on the job market. The interested student will also be well prepared to enter a doctoral programme at University of Gothenburg, Chalmers or at another university in both Sweden and worldwide.
Subject-matter
This program will provide a fundamental understanding of nature and will reflect modern research activities in physics today. Topics include the physics on all scales from the quantum description of strings, particles, atoms, matter and mesoscopic and macroscopic objects all the way to stars, galaxies and gravitational theory. There are theoretical as well as experimental courses.
To reveal the structure of the fundamental laws of Nature is still a challenging problem even though many important results have been obtained. Present research activity is focussed on high energy physics, subatomic physics, disordered systems, computational physics and complex systems in biology, economics and society.
In this programme the student can study any of these aspects of nature. The student can choose between a theoretical or an experimental profile. Among the various courses there is a core depending on the chosen profile and then the student can choose between several optional courses.

A chance to fund your studies
The University of Gothenburg is convinced that education and research flourish in an international environment. A mixture of students from different cultures enriches the learning environment and the University believes that motivated students should have a chance to study here, even if they dont have the means to cover all costs.
There are a number of opportunities to get a scholarship if you apply to the University of Gothenburg. If you are obliged to pay tuition fees in Sweden, you can apply for our scholarship that cover from half, to all of your tuition fees for the entire study programme.
There are also scholarship programmes available at bachelor's, master's, PhD and post-doctoral levels, which are administered by the Swedish Institute. The scholarship programmes target highly qualified students from certain countries.
