This route is intended for applicants who have a background or strong interest in education, have undertaken some previous study of developmental and/or educational psychology, perhaps within their first degree, and now wish to develop their knowledge in this area further.
The route offers a well-rounded introduction to areas of psychology relevant to the study of children's development, learning and education, together with more advanced routes examining psychological approaches to particular topics within education. At the end of the route, participants are required to devise and carry out their own research projects on topics in which they have brought or developed a particular interest.
Five introductory level core topic modules are offered:
- developmental psychology,
- cognitive psychology;
- biological psychology;
- social psychology
- individual differences
These are followed by two advanced modules: quantitative and other research methods in psychology; and a series of contemporary psychological explanations and research applications in a broad range of educational contexts.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme, students will have:
- a comprehensive understanding of research techniques, and a thorough knowledge of the literature applicable to their specific educational domain;
- demonstrated originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in their field;
- shown abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies;
- demonstrated self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acted autonomously in the planning and implementation of research.
Continuing
Students wishing to continue from the Master of Education to PhD or EdD are required to achieve a mark of 70 or higher for the thesis.
ou will have 64 hours of thematic route sessions in Psychology and Education. There are 5 core topics providing an introduction to key ideas, theories and research:
- Developmental Psychology
- Cognitive Psychology
- Biological Psychology
- Social Psychology
- Individual Differences
- Additional elements will support your development of research skills: practical work in psychology (for BPS students only), research seminars, quantitative data analysis, research workshops and a research thesis.
In addition to the above, you will attend the Research Methods Strand (see below) where you will also mix with students and staff from other specialisms within the Faculty . Most of your interactions will be with other students and academic staff within the Psychology and Education route.

Please note: If you are applying for the 1-year full time MPhil or the 2-year part time MEd, please complete the task below. This route is not open to PGCE-MEd applicants.
Choose an area of interest to you in psychology and discuss it in relation to education. In writing this short essay (1500-2000 words), please refer explicitly to relevant theoretical or empirical publications using a critical and reflective lens. Essays beyond the word limit will not be accepted.
