We focus on the nature and function of communication, information and media institutions, policies, processes and systems, examining their impact on individuals and social, organizational, national and international affairs. In doing so, our programs interdisciplinary approaches to these issues are strongly supported and encouraged.

SC&I's PhD program provides doctoral training for students seeking theoretical and research skills for scholarly and professional leadership in the fields of communication, library and information science, journalism and media studies. The unique combination of communication, information and media in a single program helps prepare students to address key questions in our society in the 21st century.

The program is officially offered through the Graduate School-New Brunswick (GS-NB) as the PhD program in Communication, Information and Library Studies. GS-NB enrolls nearly 4,000 students in 59 doctoral programs and 57 master's programs. With approximately 50 faculty and with 110 students currently enrolled, the CILS PhD program is the third largest GS-NB doctoral program.

The focus of the program is on the nature and function of communication, information and media institutions, policies, processes and systems and their impact on individuals and social, organizational, national, and international affairs. Interdisciplinary approaches to these issues are encouraged in the program. The program is especially well-suited for those interested in the interaction between new information and communication technologies, the individuals who use them, and the social, cultural and political systems in which they are embedded. However, students with more narrowly aligned disciplinary interests will also find that this program serves them well.
