The general goal of the programme is to give students sufficient scientific and technological knowledge for the career of chemical and process engineer in different fields of the process industry. Moreover, the students will attain the basis for doctoral studies and for continuous education in the field.

A specific goal of the programme is to promote and develop students' abilities to create innovations and new technology.

The main characteristics of the Master's Programme are:

  • Development and support of innovativeness and creativity of the students by offering interdisciplinary education and special courses focusing on the development of innovation-related skills.
  • Strong industrial orientation of the studies, focused on pulp and paper, fine and commodity chemicals and the metallurgical industries.
  • A deep scientific basis of the education is ensured by the fact that the main topics of the curriculum correspond to the main research fields of the department.
  • Special focus is given to communication skills needed in the working environment. This is done by offering specialised courses on the subject and by integrating the teaching of communication skills into subject and advanced studies.

Intended learning outcome

The general objective of the programme is to give students sufficient scientific and technological knowledge for the career of chemical and process engineers in different fields of process industry. Moreover, the students will attain the basis for doctoral/Ph.D. studies and for continuous education in the field.

A specific goal is to promote and develop students' abilities to create innovations and new technology. This is realized by offering interdisciplinary education and special courses focusing on the development of innovation-related skills. The programme also emphasizes internationality and communication skills needed in the modern working environment.

Career prospects

The programme gives students capabilities to work in different kinds of assignments in the process industry, most typically in R&D, design and operation of plants. Most graduates will find their placement in the chemical, pulp and paper, or metallurgical industry. However, nowadays the skills of chemical engineers are increasingly in demand outside the traditional process industry

Degree structure and studies

The Master's degree programme in Chemical and Process Engineering, "Innovative Process and Product Engineering", (120 ECTS credits) is a two-year degree programme. In practice, this means three semesters (30 ECTS credits each) plus one semester for the Master's thesis project (30 ECTS credits).

The degree structure of 120 ECTS consists of the following:

  • general studies: 9 ECTS credits
  • major subject studies: 70 ECTS credits
  • minor subject studies: 20 ECTS credits
  • elective studies: minimum 21 ECTS credits.

Major and Minor Subjects

Major Subject: Sustainable Process Engineering

The person responsible for the major in Sustainable Process Engineering is Professor
Ilkka Turunen, D.Sc. (Tech.).

The major subject includes thorough courses in product, process and plant design. The goals of modern engineering work, such as sustainability, innovativeness and interdisciplinary methodology, are emphasized in addition to the more traditional but still important economic and technological objectives. A deep phenomenological description of the most important unit processes is included. Moreover, courses on specific unit operations can be chosen from a wide list.

Minor Subject: Advanced Design Methodology

The person responsible for the minor in Advanced Design Methodology is Professor Andrzej Kraslawski, Ph.D.

The minor topic gives students skills and knowledge for process design and R&D. The development of new technology and innovations is emphasized in the programme. Therefore, courses such as creative design, process intensification and process modelling are included. In addition, courses on
important computational tools, e.g. process simulation and computational fluid dynamics, belong to the subject.

Scholarships

Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) offers international degree students a limited number of scholarships in three different categories:

  • Tuition Fee Scholarship, covering 25-100 % of the tuition fee (if applicable)
  • Full Scholarship, covering the tuition fee and living expenses
  • Living Cost Scholarship, covering the living costs

The scholarships are based on academic excellence and/or the need for financial aid to support the studies at LUT.

Scholarship Programmes

LUT General Scholarship Program

The scholarships offer you the possibility of being financially supported during your period of study at LUT. The aim of the LUT general scholarship program is to help you with your tuition fee or to get financial support for your living expenses in adequately completing your studies at LUT. The student applies for a scholarship in one of the categories mentioned above, while LUT takes care of granting the possible scholarship from this programme.

Partnership Scholarship Program for Russian Universities

The aim of the scholarship program is to create more extensive cooperation between LUT and a number of Russian universities on education and research and to strengthen these networks, as well as to transfer knowledge between the Finnish and Russian economies.

Students coming from these Russian universities do not have to specifically apply for this particular scholarship. The student applies for a scholarship in one of the categories mentioned above, while LUT takes care of granting the possible scholarship from this programme whenever the student becomes eligible for this scholarship.

The Fulbright-Lappeenranta University of Technology Graduate Award

The Fulbright student award competition is open to students from the U.S. who have at least a Bachelor's degree. The Fulbright scholarship has its own application process, application period and criteria.
