The department also offers a course of study leading to a PhD in mathematical sciences. This is a small, highly selective program that emphasizes individual study in one or more areas of research pursued by department faculty: fluid dynamics and shock waves; geometric analysis; optimization; complexity theory; partial differential equations of elliptic, hyperbolic and mixed type; the theory of risk; mathematical, theoretical and computational physics; universal algebras; operator theory; and the theory of plasma waves.

Computing facilities include clusters shared between the Department of Mathematical Sciences and the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Total computing power of these shared clusters is equivalent to 480 cores.

  • Sixty-credit hours of graduate-level course work are required for admission to the PhD program. The student will then take the Advanced Qualifying Examination and, if a passing grade is obtained, immediately begin thesis research. Another six credit-hours, usually spread over three years, will be earned in the course of completing the doctoral dissertation. The doctoral degree will be awarded upon the successful defense of the dissertation.
  • A major in mathematics, statistics, computer science or one of the physical or engineering sciences. In exceptional cases, applicants holding a major in a biological science, economics or finance may be considered. All applicants, regardless of major or other qualifications, must have completed courses in Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra at the time of application. Applicants who have not completed a year sequence in Advanced Calculus, but who are otherwise qualified, will be required to remove this deficiency before completing the program.
  • A B average (GPA of 3.0/4.0) in science and mathematics courses
  • GRE scores and letters of recommendation as described below
  • Application fee: A $50.00 nonrefundable application fee, made payable to Yeshiva University, must accompany all applications. Payment may be made by check, money order or credit card, in US dollars.
  • Transcripts: Every application must be accompanied by official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Photocopies or scans of transcripts are not acceptable. Transcripts from universities outside the United States must include translation/evaluation by World Education Services.
  • Letters of Recommendation: Three letters of recommendation are required. Request that the letters be sent directly from the recommender to the Department of Mathematical Sciences, attention: Department Chair. E-mailed letters of reference are acceptable.
  • Personal Statement: Include a brief statement describing your goals in pursuing graduate study in mathematics at Yeshiva University. Use this opportunity to provide any information which is not reflected in the remainder of your application but which you feel is important and would like us to consider. Examples would be relevant extra-curricular activities or relevant non-academic accomplishments.
  • Curriculum Vitae: Include a curriculum vitae, giving full contact information and details of education, work experience, and any other experience related to graduate study in Mathematics.
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE):The GRE General Test, as well as the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics, are both required. Both examinations must have been taken within the past five years.
  • Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL): The TOEFL is required for international applicants who have completed a bachelor's degree from an institution in a non-English-speaking country. TOEFL scores are valid for two years from the test date. Ordinarily, a score of at 550 (written version), 213 (CBT) or 80 (IBT) is required.
