This course offers advanced level practice for nurse practitioners who provide direct care to patients, clients, service users or populations. Students gain the skills and knowledge in the areas of clinical and direct care practice; leadership and collaborative practice; improving quality and developing practice and developing self and others (Department of Health, Advanced Level Practice, November 2010). Nurses learn to work as expert autonomous practitioners within all fields of healthcare.

The course equips students with the contemporary theoretical skills, knowledge and awareness of professional skills for advanced practice. It develops skills in research and applied data analysis as well as a deeper understanding of health and social care settings and the role of an advanced nurse practitioner.

The course prepares students for new efficient and ethical ways of working that offer better quality of life and quality of care by placing service users and carers at the centre of decision-making and service redesign.
Students will attend lectures/seminars once a week. The course takes 2 years to complete, but students have the option of undertaking it over a maximum 5 years.

Who is the course for?
The course is for experienced nurses working in senior positions or those who are preparing for advanced nurse practitioner, care manager, nurse consultant or clinical leadership roles in primary, secondary, or tertiary healthcare settings. Students need to be nurses working in senior clinical positions. A clinical work placement with appropriate supervision for physical assessment is required.

The course includes two core taught modules, a further four core modules and a research dissertation. Modules must be undertaken and completed in a specific progression.

Core modules:

* Introduction to research methods and applied data analysis (30 credits)
* Critical approaches to advanced practice (15 credits)
* Disseratation (60 credits)

Child and Adult route modules:

* Advanced physical assessment across the lifespan (15 credits)
* Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning across the lifespan (15 credits)
* Independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing (15 credits)
* Pathophysiological basis for advanced practice (15 credits)

Neonatal route modules:

* Advanced physical assessment for neonates (15 credits)
* Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning for neonates (15 credits)
* Independent and supplementary non-medical prescribing (15 credits)
* Pathophysiological basis for advanced practice (15 credits)

* Registration as a nurse * Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and working in a healthcare setting * A first or upper second class honour degree, in a relevant subject from an approved institution of higher education * If you do not have a degree you will be considered, but may have to demonstrate an ability to study at degree level. * Current professional registration with a relevant professional/statutory body or equivalentEnglish Requirements For students whose first language is not English, one of the following is also required: * A first degree from a UK university or an overseas institution recognised by the University as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions in Australia, Canada or the USA * IELTS: 7.0 * TOEFL (internet based): 107 * Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: 72 * Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned.
