The PhD program in aerospace engineering accommodates individual interests and encourages independent and innovative study. Students are part of a diverse intellectual community dedicated to advancing the state of the art and practice of aerospace engineering.

All students pursuing the PhD are required to pass both a qualifying and a comprehensive examination administered by the program committee. In addition:

  • course work directly related to the research area (18)

  • graduate courses outside the major research area (9)

  • MAE 799 Dissertation credit hours (12)

Students in the PhD program who have not completed an MS degree previously will be allowed to apply for a Master of Science in Passing after successfully completing the comprehensive exams.

Admission to the aerospace engineering doctoral program is highly competitive. Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Division of Graduate Education and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.

To be considered for admission to the program, the student must submit these items:

  1. graduate admission application
  2. application fee
  3. GRE scores
  4. official transcripts from all prior institutions attended
  5. personal statement
  6. resume or curriculum vitae
  7. proof of English language proficiency*
  8. three letters of recommendation

*An applicant whose native language is not English is required to achieve a minimum of score of 80 on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
