This BEng Aeronautical Engineering degree has been developed to allow you to gain a broad-based knowledge of aeronautical engineering plus the chance to specialise in modern engineering disciplines. In addition to providing knowledge to underpin engineering fundamentals, mathematical modelling and simulation, a strong theme throughout our Aeronautical Engineering degree is group work and design.

Our Aeronautical Engineering degree covers the basic principles of aerospace technology including aerodynamics, thermodynamics, stress analysis, mechanics, dynamics and control engineering sciences which underpin avionics, design and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE). The application of these subjects to aircraft and aero-engine design and development is common across all years of our Aeronautical Engineering BEng (Hons) degree.

Why you should study this course

Our Aeronautical Engineering BEng (Hons) degree is designed to provide a foundation for a career in the aerospace industry, allowing you to study fundamental engineering and cover specialist subject areas from day one. We are in the UK top 10 for Aeronautical Engineering in both the The Times Good University Guide 2019 and The Complete University Guide 2019, meaning we are one of the very best places to study this exciting subject area.

The Aeronautical Engineering BEng is accredited by The Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, offering good foundations from which graduates can pursue professional recognition such as Chartered Engineer status.

Year 1

In year one, you will have the opportunity to study a range of different areas including aircraft systems, computing, elasticity, materials, mathematics and mechanics, aircraft design, manufacturing, technology and management, thermodynamics and risk analysis.

Courses

  • Fluid Mechanics Core
  • Thermodynamics Core
  • Computing Core
  • Introduction to Aircraft Design Core
  • Manufacturing, Technology and Management Core

Year 2

In year two of this course, you’ll have the opportunity to study a range of different areas including aircraft, control engineering, dynamics and vibration, electrotechnology, aerodynamics, structural design, turbomachinery and propulsion, and systems reliability.

Students gain an appreciation of the different philosophies used for manufacturing automotive and aerospace engineering products and components, learn how a computer aided engineering (CAE) environment can be used to facilitate the design of these products and to undertake the design of a simple aeronautical or automotive structure.

Semester 1

  • Engineering Mathematics Part 3
  • Dynamics and Vibration
  • Systems Reliability Assessment
  • Low Speed Aerodynamics
  • Aircraft Structural Loading
  • Mechanics of Materials

Semester 2

  • High Speed Aerodynamics
  • Control Engineering
  • Turbomachinery and Propulsion
  • Aircraft Systems and Performance Part 2
  • Electrotechnology

Year 3

During the third year of your studies, you’ll have the opportunity to undertake design studies and management, plus you’ll also have the option to tailor the course to suit your interests by selecting from the range of optional modules available.

  • BEng Aero Project Stage 1
  • Aircraft Stability and Flight Test

Semester 2

  • BEng Aero Project Stage 2
  • Aircraft Design
  • Gas Turbine Design Part 2
  • Finite Element Methods
  • Rotocraft Engineering
  • Aerodynamics
  • Principles of Composite Materials and Structures
  • Flight Control Systems
  • Sound Radiation from Structures

Applicants are selected on the basis of their UCAS application and interview in order to assess academic potential beyond that provided as part of the application. An interview also gives applicants the opportunity to visit the department, meet staff and students, see facilities and get an insight into what it is like to be a student at Loughborough. Loughborough accepts a wide range of qualifications for entry.

What are the English language requirements to study here?

The standard University IELTS English language requirements is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each individual element (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Some Schools/Departments may require higher levels of English language than those specified. The requirements needed, will be sent to you in your offer communication.

For Research Degrees, some Schools/Departments may ask for a higher standard of English language qualifications due to the nature of the research work involved. Details will be included in your offer letter if this applies.

For Undergraduate Degree courses, some Schools/Departments may require higher levels than those specified.  These higher levels are detailed, where relevant and more information can be found here.

Generally the English Language test should have been taken within the previous two years, but where the test is older, evidence of continuing use of English, whether in the workplace or elsewhere, in the intervening period may be required.
