Description

Ethnic studies playes a critical social role in graduates’ ability to function successfully in today’s multicultural world. American ethnic groups are the fastest growing sectors of the U.S. Population projections by the U.S. Bureau of the Census indicate that people of color will become the majority in the U.S. by as early as 2030. People of color already form the majority in several states — such as California, New Mexico and Hawaii - and are expected to become two-thirds of those states' population by 2025.

The undergraduate interdisciplinary major provides a broad liberal arts education with skills in critical thinking, comparative analysis, social theory, data analysis, and oral and written communications. Emphasis will be placed on preparing students to live and work in a diverse world.

Careers

Career prospects are strong for students with a degree in American ethnic studies. Census data tells us that nationally, ethnic studies graduates earn high salaries and low unemployment figures. In fact, according to a Wall Street Journal survey, graduates show a lower postgraduation employment rate and a higher salary rate than other majors, including anthropology, art history, animal sciences and many others.

advertising and public relations, and biology. Graduates find employment in many fields, including community development, business, urban planning, public health, social work, teacher education, union organizing and youth work, journalism, nonprofit management, medical fields, comunity development, legal
