Applied Community and Social Studies

Description

For some people, applied community studies is a natural personal and professional development route due to their work in communities either locally or elsewhere in the UK or in the world. For others, it may be an opportunity to have a good grounding in the community, social welfare and charity sectors after studying related courses at college. In addition to learning about social policy and about the management and organisation of welfare, you will learn about particular service provision such as Social Housing, Advice and Guidance, Care and Community development.

Course Content

This programme is underpinned by a commitment to prepare you for working in the community development and social welfare fields, known as the Third Sector. In the first year you will study: Individual and Group Techniques, Care, Welfare and Community, Human Rights and Welfare Law, Engaging with the Third Sector and Welfare and Social Enterprise.

You will be introduced, through interactive sessions, to the breadth and depth of state, private and voluntary sector organisations.

The second and final years build on this by focusing on gaining practical experience in an agency linked to your areas of interest. You will also study Sociology, Community Development, Community Research, Psychology, Globalisation and social action and a research subject of your choice.

Our course uses a variety of teaching and interactive methods including lectures, seminars, group work, student presentations, visits, guest speakers and placements. Visits this year included the Houses
of Parliament, local social enterprises and community projects.

Funding

Merit Scholarship scheme: £1,000, in year one only and based on academic performance.

• Available to all international students applying for full-time undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at Coventry University.
• Scholarships are allocated on the basis of academic merit. (Postgraduate applicants must hold 2.1 or equivalent, undergraduate applicants must hold A-levels or equivalent at grades BBC)
• There is no separate scholarship application process: all undergraduate applications from self-funded international students from any non-EU country and postgraduate applications from international, will automatically be considered for a merit award. You will not have to do anything, if you are successful you will be notified in due course by the International Office.
