Description

Applied Mathematics is oriented to technology and practical applications. Applied Mathematics teaches you to construct mathematical models to solve mathematical problems and to analyse the results.

Mathematics is a multifaceted subject. Applied Mathematics focuses on using mathematics in practical situations. If you are interested in calculations that are placed in a technical context, this is the degree programme for you.

Whereas the Mathematics degree is concerned with abstract matters, the emphasis in the Applied Mathematics programme is on practical applications. One example is computing the flows of water, air or blood. Other examples are operating systems for robots, aeroplanes and satellites. The ability to think in an abstract way is still important – when you study Applied Mathematics, you also learn how to structure your reasoning and draw conclusions.

The University of Groningen offers degree programmes in Mathematics as well as Applied Mathematics. Year 1 is largely the same for both Bachelor's programmes. You gradually work towards your specialization. In the Applied Mathematics programme you learn how to make simulation models and use them to make predictions.

Job perspectives

Applied Mathematics consists of a broad Bachelor's programme, after which you can specialize with a Master's degree programme. You can then continue in the academic world or opt for a career in the business world either in the Netherlands or abroad! Research, advising or teaching… there are many fields open to you!

Business

After you finished your study in Applied Mathematics you have many opportunities to start a career in the business sector. For example at an insurance company, or at a consultancy bureau. Multinationals like Shell, Philips and ABN Amro are welcoming Apllied Mathematicians enthusiastically. But smaller and middle-sized enterprises are also increasingly hiring Applied Mathematicians.

Research

When you have your Master's degree you can carry out PhD research at a university. Your Master's degree will also qualify you for positions with research institutes such as TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research) and the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute).

The Groningen science and engineering programmes stand out for their academic excellence. The work pace in the first year is generally high and the courses contents demanding. The first year curriculum concentrates on laying a sound basis for our engineering and natural science disciplines. This allows our students to chooise their specialisation tracks already in their second Bachelor's year.

Credits per year: 60 ECTS; most courses are 5 ECTS.

Study abroad

  • Study abroad is optional
  • Maximum of 30 EC

(Binding) study advice

  • A minimum of 45 EC in the first 12 months ( binding )
  • Get your propedeutic diploma in the first 24 months ( binding )

You will be offered study advice after first and second years of study. You can expect a positive result if you have earned more than 45 ECTS credit points (out of a total of 60 ECTS). If you have earned fewer than 45 ECTS and are issued a negative result, you will not be allowed to continue with your degree programme.

In addition, you are also expected to pass all your first-year exams by the end of your second year of study. If you don't, you will be issued a negative result and will have to leave the degree programme. You will receive preliminary study advice in December to make sure that you know where you stand.
