The Applied Statistics specialization is oriented toward practical statistical situations. It aims at teaching data analytic procedures and their applications to statistical problems. In keeping with this goal, students are required to become skilled at statistical computing and participate actively in the consulting projects that arise in the Statistical Consulting Laboratory. This degree will prepare students for careers in government, industry, and quantitative research in other scientific disciplines.

  • Design and Analysis of Experiments
  • Advanced Statistical Methods
  • Seminar and Projects in Statistical Consulting

All students are expected to take the Applied Statistics Qualifying Examination, which consists of an in-class examination and a Data Analysis Report. All students seeking the MA in Statistics with the Applied Statistics Specialization need to pass the Applied Statistics Qualifying Examination with at least a “MA Level” pass. Each student has two attempts to pass the exam.

Continuation to the Ph.D. is subject to the student’s academic performance being deemed excellent by all standards that the department uses to assess degree progress such as: exams, grades, coursework, and timely progress toward the degree. Students must demonstrate an ability to work independently and to make innovative and original contributions to the critical literature of the field.
