As of September 2015 this specialisation will be offered as three separate specialisations: Heritage Management in a World Context, Heritage of Indigenous Peoples and Museum Studies.

This master's specialisation will explore the roots and development of archaeological heritage management and modern museum practice. Approaches to the valuation and protection of archaeological heritage, management strategies and heritage tourism will be studied, as well as international treaties and organisations. Ethical issues, dilemmas and current debates are central to this track, and issues concerning the ownership and mobility of collections will also recur in the study of museum practice, both traditional and modern. Leiden University and the city's three main national museums (the Museum of Antiquities, the Ethnology Museum and the Museum of Natural History) have enjoyed a close working relationship since the 19th century when the museums were founded. This relationship is fostered by the many research programmes involving researchers from the University and the museums. The result is a unique master's track in which students are offered a combination of practical experience and high-quality academic research.

This programme will end in 2014
