Our philosophy
As a joint Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering we engage in research and develop graduate courses where integration between the disciplines is likely to be most valuable.

Research is also carried out in collaboration with other departments in the University, particularly Mechanical Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Management, and Computer Science.

The dissemination of research findings is seen as a vital component of the research process and graduate students are encouraged to prepare papers for publication as part of their research training. We encourage a wide range of interests. Academic staff are always open to ideas which extend existing work or introduce new topics to their existing subject areas.

Our applicants
The MPhil/PhD programme is an integral part of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. Successful applicants are welcomed very much as junior academic colleagues rather than students, and are expected to play a full and professional role in contributing to the Departments objective of international academic excellence.

We seek applications from outstanding individuals from anywhere in the world who are strongly committed to and potentially capable of high-quality academic research in any of the disciplinary areas covered by our Research Centres.

Contents

The MPhil/PhD combines taught research training and applied research practice. Candidates join the Department as a member of the Research Centre in which they initially have a broad research interest and that will have overseen their acceptance into the Department.

Thesis
Candidates are expected to carry out supervised research at the leading edge of their chosen subject, which must then be written up as a substantial thesis. They initially register on the MPhil degree and are upgraded to PhD status after successful transfer examination which should usually take place at the end of their first year.

Viva exam
The final stage of the PhD degree is the oral or viva voce examination, in which students are required to defend the thesis to a Board of Examiners.

Requirements

* First or good second class honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject.

The minimum non-graduate qualifications* acceptable for admission to the University of Bath are passes at a satisfactory level in either of the following examinations:

* Institution of Chemical Engineers Part III or
* Membership of recognised professional institutions of at least graduate status or a relevant professional qualification acceptable to the Board of Studies
* Extended and responsible experience at an appropriate standard in a relevant field acceptable to the Board of Studies

* Except where otherwise stated, these conditions refer to candidates for the Degree of Master only.

International Students

All non-native speakers of English are required to have passed English language tests as follows:

* Either IELTS: a score of at least 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in all four parts (Listening, Reading, Speaking, and Writing)
* Or TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test) or 250 (computer-based test) with a score of not less than 4 in TWE or 100 (internet-based test) with not less than 24 in each of the components.

If you need to develop your English language skills, the Universitys English Language Centre offers a number of courses.

English Language Requirements

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since April 2014 the ETS tests (including TOEFL and TOEIC) are no longer accepted for Tier 4 visa applications to the United Kingdom. The university might still accept these tests to admit you to the university, but if you require a Tier 4 visa to enter the UK and begin your degree programme, these tests will not be sufficient to obtain your Visa.

Funding

We are committed to supporting excellence in student research we have over £6,000,000 available for new research students.

You can find funding for research degrees through studentships or scholarships.

Studentships contribute to tuition fees and living expenses, and often provide a training support grant too.

Scholarships provide a tuition fee discount with some scholarships covering the full fees for your entire programme of study and a training support grant.

University Research Studentships
University Research Studentships are for excellent Home/EU and Overseas students. The awards cover tuition fees; a training support grant of £1,000 a year; and a tax-free allowance of at least £13,590 a year.

Graduate School Scholarships
Graduate School Scholarships provide a tuition fee discount of up to 100% for Home/EU fee payers and up to 75% for Overseas fee payers, and a training support grant.

The Esther Parkin PhD Scholarship Fund
We have two David Parkin PhD Scholarships for excellent Overseas students, generously donated by the Esther Parkin Trust.

The awards cover the full tuition fee costs, plus a training support grant of £1000 total over the three years. The recipients for entry in 2012/13 are for students applying to study in the Faculty of Science.

International funding
International students are eligible to apply for a number of funding options. This includes the various scholarships and studentships provided by the Graduate Schools.

UK Research Council Studentships: Doctoral Training Centres
Doctoral Training Centres provide a dynamic, multidisciplinary research and training environment. There are funding opportunities in Digital Media, Special Effects and Animation, Sustainable Chemical Technologies, Engineering and Humanities and Social Sciences.

UK Research Council Studentships
We hold grants of more than £2 million from;

* Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, (EPSRC)
* Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, (BBSRC)
* Medical Research Council, (MRC)
* Economic and Social Research Council, (ESRC) - research studentships in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Industrial CASE studentships, in collaboration with industry, are also available.
