In this one-year master's programme you will have the option to choose various specialisations, allowing you to acquire a broad knowledge base of the history, language and culture of Asian societies, or of the contemporary developments in this dynamic continent. During the programme, you will benefit from the breadth and depth of Asian studies research in Leiden, which combines the very best of Asia-related research in Northwestern Europe. The various specialisations offered within this programme cater for students both with and without prior proficiency in one or more Asian languages. Students with ambitions to pursue a PhD position or a career as a researcher outside the academic world, should consider the two-year research master in Asian Studies.

Specialities:
East Asian Studies:
This specialisation is designed for students interested in East Asia with a focus on fields such as history, sociology, cultural and religious studies, economics, linguistics and politics.
History, Arts and Culture of Asia:
This specialisation is specifically intended for students interested in a humanities-related approach to countries or regions of pre-modern, modern or contemporary Asia.
Politics, Society and Economy of Asia:
This specialisation is specifically intended for students interested in social science approaches to one or more countries or regions of modern or contemporary Asia.
South Asian Studies:
In this specialisation you will focus on the history, literature, art history, media, culture, religion, philosophy or philology in regions of pre-modern, modern or contemporary South Asia.
Southeast Asian Studies:
This specialisation is intended for students interested in one or more aspects of Southeast Asia, such as history, literature, media, cultural studies, religious studies, philosophy or philology.
