Southeast Asian Studies

Expertise in Leiden is particularly strong on Indonesia, but also covers the other Southeast Asian countries. In the one-year programme you will have the option to focus either on language and a single country, or on a specific discipline and region. This is further facilitated by the focus of many courses on regional issues that go beyond the study of a single country or language. The specialisation offers students ample opportunity to deepen classical or modern language learning started at BA level, or to start with the relevant modern languages. You will have the option of taking an intensive modern Indonesian language course. Knowledge of the Indonesian language is required for some, but not all, courses.
