Course Content

Course Aims

The Advanced Diploma in Arts provides students with a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies from across the University, with a strong focus on aspects of human culture and achievement.

The course aims to provide students with:

  • · a sound basis of knowledge in their chosen areas of study
  • · the ability to apply the knowledge they have acquired
  • · the ability to communicate effectively in a range of ways
  • · the skills to connect across geographical, disciplinary, social and cultural boundaries
  • · an understanding of the value of ethical behaviour.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge in one or more areas of study;
  • analyse, critically evaluate and communicate ideas and solve problems in their major and other fields of study;
  • understand the processes through which current knowledge has been developed in their major and other fields of study;
  • understand the relationships and connections between different fields of study; and
  • exhibit an appreciation of ethical values and cultural diversity.

    Knowledge of a Discipline

    Students will possess a body of knowledge relevant to their fields of study, and a grasp of the principles, practices and boundaries of their discipline. This knowledge will be taught in lectures, unit materials and online activities and will be assessed throughout the degree through a range of different activities.

    Communication Skills

    Students will possess a good standard of oral, visual and written communication skills relevant to their fields of study, including, where applicable, the possession of these skills in languages other than English. These skills will be taught and practised in lectures, tutorials and online activities. Students will recognise the importance of continuing to develop their oral, visual, and written communication skills, and be able to use appropriate communication technologies.

    Global Perspectives

    Students will be taught how the disciplines in their major and other fields of study have developed both nationally and internationally over time. Students will be assessed on their capacity to understand the implications of international events for their areas of study.

    Information Literacy

    Students will be taught how to recognise relevant information and to use appropriate media, tools and methodologies to locate, access and use information. Through assessment tasks, they will learn how to critically evaluate the sources, values and validity of information, and to interpret it.

    Life-Long Learning

    The development of intellectual capacity and critical thinking skills will be taught in lectures, unit materials and online activities. Through the completion of assessment tasks, students will develop the necessary lifelong skills to be able to research, write about and discuss a range of issues. These skills are transferable and essential lifelong skills.

    Problem Solving

    Students will be taught how to locate, evaluate and apply information from a variety of sources throughout their degree. Students will be assessed on their ability to understand assignment tasks and to integrate relevant theory and literature into their own analysis.

    Social Responsibility

    Students will be taught about their professional responsibilities as researchers to provide balanced and accurate research; they have a social responsibility to question and challenge the facts. Their awareness of these responsibilities will be assessed and taught through the activities assigned for assessment and through discussions in online postings.

    Team Work

    The development of collaboration and group participation skills will be developed through on-campus and online interactive teaching. Graduates will learn the importance of participating in discussions in a professional, respectful and ethical manner.

    For direct admission into undergraduate courses offered by the University of New England, international applicants must have completed an educational qualification considered to be at least equivalent to completion of Year 12 in Australia.
