Biology: Microbial Biotechnology and Health

This knowledge can lead to the improvement of micro-organisms as production platforms for valuable compounds such as food additives and antibiotics. Important aspects of the development and physiology of micro-organisms and their interaction with the environment can be studied at the molecular, genetic, physiological and cellular levels, often in an integrated manner. An important part of the master education is a research project, which can be chosen from a large variety of topics, including microbial growth and development and production of important compounds such as antibiotics. Research questions are tackled from a multidisciplinary approach, combining disciplines such as molecular genetics, genomics, cell biology, biochemistry, microscopy and cell physiology. Research approaches exploit recent genomic and technological advances, for example expanding genomic sequence information, genomics and proteomics technology and confocal laser scanning microscopy which enables the study of molecules in living cells and multicellular organisms in unprecedented detail.
