The Department of Biological and Biomedical Sciences offers you a modern and friendly environment in which to study with state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching facilities. You have the freedom to develop as individuals but with the comforting knowledge that help and support is always available. The programme initially provides a foundation for biomedical science, focusing on the basic molecules of life, cell structure and body functions. This leads on to an in-depth understanding of physiology, microbiology and biochemistry. On completion of this foundation, you advance your clinical knowledge through the study of subjects such as pathology, haematology, bacteriology and clinical chemistry. The theoretical elements of the programme are supported by the provision of laboratory sessions in which you become proficient in modern scientific techniques that are currently in use in the biomedical industries. In addition the programme is designed to provide you with the ability to gather and interpret scientific data, to develop team work and communications skills and to acquire effective IT skills. The degree itself is approved by the Health Professions Council (HPC) for registration purposes, and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for licenciate membership. Biomedical Science provides the scientific foundation for the clinical diagnosis of disease and is vital to the operation of the National Health Service and other health-related industries. Your study of Biomedical Science (cellular pathology, clinical biochemistry, haematology, immunology and clinical microbiology) will give you the knowledge and skills needed to undertake this key role as a biomedical scientist.
As a biomedical scientist you would be responsible for around 70% of the diagnoses made in the NHS, a vital role which determines the treatment administered by other health care professionals (medical practitioners, nurses, dietitians, physiotherapists and radiographers).
The programme focuses on the topics which are most relevant in hospital laboratories. The degree is designed to produce highly employable graduates with both the advanced theoretical knowledge and the essential practical skills needed by todayâs professional biomedical scientist.
Career Opportunities
The programme satisfies the educational requirements for HPC registration and, after gaining suitable experience in hospital laboratories, for Licentiate Membership of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), essential for those wishing to practice as biomedical scientists. There is an opportunity to return to Glasgow Caledonian to study a postgraduate qualification in Biomedical Science or more specialised MSc programmes. Honours graduates may take up research posts or studentships. Other career opportunities include administration, management, information science, medical sales, teaching and many others.
Teaching Methods
We take a flexible approach to learning and teaching, combining larger scale interactive lectures with small group sessions examining case studies and honing data analysis and presentation skills, while retaining the emphasis on laboratory based practical classes. This allows our students to gain exposure to the rigour and demands of scientific investigation.
Our third year students, who are selected for Applied Biomedical Science, undertake a 15 week placement in an NHS clinical laboratory, successful completion of which permits them to apply for registration with the Health & Care Professions Council on graduation.
We offer the only programme of this nature within Glasgow, approved by the Health & Care Professions Council and accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.
The basis of our students' practical work in their in their first two levels is the development of their core laboratory skills which leads to more advanced training in Level 3. Our Level 4 students undertake a specialist molecular biology workshop in addition to an individual lab based project, all undertaken in our recently refurbished suite of teaching and research laboratories.
Our third year students have the opportunity to study abroad for a semester in our international exchange programme at Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Course Content
Work Placement
NHS Education Scotland have agreed that at least 30 workbased placement opportunities will be available in Semester B of the third year; as places are limited, not all students are guaranteed one. These placements take place in Scottish hospitals, in a relevant clinical disciplines. By undertaking this placement, at completion of your Honours degree, you will be able to apply to register as a biomedical scientist with the HPC.

Year 1: Foundation modules.
Year 2: Fundamental Pathophysiology, Introduction to Microbiology, Cellular Metabolism &
Regulation, Haematology, Immunology and Clinical Biochemistry.
Year 3: Clinical Microbiology, Essential Molecular Biology, Systematic & Cellular Pathology, Practice Placement or Microbial Genomes, Introduction to Cell Biology, General & Systematic Pharmacology.
Year 4: Molecular Biology Workshop, Research Project plus four modules.
Assessment Methods
Our graduates leave university with a balanced knowledge and understanding of all branches of biomedical science after completing a course designed to allow them to become enquiring, independent learners while exhibiting high levels of professionalism.

Disclosure Requirement: Students are required to undergo an enhanced criminal disclosure procedure with Disclosure Scotland.
In addition to meeting the qualification requirements, international students where English is not the first language require an IELTS score of 7.0 with no element below 6.5.
