Description

This degree is designed for students wanting a science-based course that is focused towards career opportunities in the medical, paramedical and forensic fields. The areas of study include: basic science (biology, chemistry and mathematics) followed by human physiology, genetics, nutrition, biochemistry and microbiology and the integration and applications of disciplines such as anatomy, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology and human physiology into biomedical science. Study is also available in bioethics and sociology of medicine.

Major career options are contemporary areas of the biomedical industry such as positions in pathology and medical laboratories, hospitals and medical supply companies, as well as in research and development. The course provides an excellent scientific basis for entry into postgraduate awards such as medicine, pharmacy, business administration and law.

Course Content

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • demonstrate a broad knowledge of biomedical science, including the creative endeavour involved in acquiring new knowledge, and the contestable and testable nature of scientific knowledge;
  • use and apply recognised methods of biomedical science, appropriate practical techniques and tools for processes of discovery and inquiry;
  • demonstrate personal and social responsibility through an awareness of the ethical frameworks, by working safely and responsibly in individual and team environments; and
  • use scientific literacy to understand and explain scientific issues to peers, scientific non-experts and the general community.

    Requirements

    A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Rule Undergraduate Policy).

    Assumed knowledge is two unit Mathematics.

    Recommended studies: Biology and/or Chemistry and/or Physics

    For students without the recommended background knowledge, the School offers Foundation units in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
