Description

Chartered Building Surveyors offer professional advice on many areas relating to the occupation and construction of property, from the design of modern structures to facilities management. The extensive training ensures that they are well-grounded in building technology, the law, building contracts, costs (including running costs) and engineering services. Building Surveyors' long-established and appreciated skills include diagnosis and remedy of building faults, rehabilitation and extension of buildings, detailed building surveys, property appraisals, and the management of property. They are also involved in design, contract administration and budget control, planned maintenance, project management, building conservation and a variety of property-related activities, particularly in relation to Property Care. Building Surveyors also represent clients in building disputes and help untangle the complexities of planning and building controls. The Honours Degree is a five-year part-time programme. In order to be considered for admission to the programme, students must be employed in a Building Surveying capacity either in Private Practice, Public Authority, Statutory or Voluntary Body, or another approved area of employment.The programme is designed to integrate with the full-time BSc (Hons) in Building Surveying. Students generally attend all five years part-time but a mixture of part-time and full-time study modes is possible.

Course Content

Year 1: Studies include the principles of Construction Technology and Building Performance. Modules include Property Legislation,Economics and Cost Studies. Year 2: You build on the foundation started in Year 1, with additional modules including Building Contracts, Structural Engineering, Health and Safety, Computer Aided Drawing and Land Surveying. Year 3: As well as undertaking a work placement for six to eight months, further studies include Construction Technology, Building Performance and Statutory Control. Year 4: An Honours dissertation with options in areas such as Conservation, Facilities Management, Advanced CAD and the Internet. Other core modules include Project Management and Building Surveying Studies.

Work Placement

Students have the opportunity to undertake an accredited work placement at the end of Level 2, returning to university study for Semester B of Level 3.

Assessment Methods

Our students have many opportunities to enhance their employability by studying abroad. Through KAR Scholarship funding our students have worked in Ladakh in India and Guedelon in France; students have enjoyed placements in New Zealand while next year, two students will be attending Barcelona University for a six month Erasmus Exchange.

Teaching Methods

The employability of our students is in part due to our excellent links with our professional partners which include the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Chartered Institute of Builders, who provide our industry standard course accreditation and Historic Scotland as well as a six month industry placement at the beginning of third year, something no other Scottish institution offers.
For their final year, our students undertake Building Surveying Studies, an industry based project driven by the professional competency requirements deemed essential by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

  • Higher Grade and A Level: 285 UCAS points (preferably a combination of As and Bs at Scottish Higher Grade)
  • ILC: 285 UCAS points from Higher grades C1 or above
  • Essential Subjects: English (S) & Mathematics (S)
  • Recommended Subjects: English (H) and Mathematics (H) (at least grade B for both), a science subject (H)

Accreditation

The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). On successful completion of their Honours degree, graduates may commence working towards their professional qualification to obtain chartered membership of the Institution (MRICS).
