The energy market is changing very rapidly. What used to be a centralised market with few players has turned into a much more decentralised market where traditional users can become producers as well. Technical developments rapidly follow each other, and ICT is becoming more and more integrated into the traditional energy network.

Next to these technological developments, the regulatory and political context is evolving as well. International agreements, European legislation and national policies influence day-to-day business in the energy sector while we are making a transition towards a more sustainable world. Managers working in the energy sector of the future need to know about the key issues in both the area of technology and the market if they want to successfully guide the transition process. At the same time they will need to realize benefits for their organisations according to the principle of people, planet, profit.

Dates and study load
The Master of Business in Energy systems is a two-year part-time programme. The classroom modules are taught in 12 three-day course weeks (Wednesday to Friday). The course weeks include both daytime lectures and evening programmes. Next to the lecture hours time is to be reserved for self study, the advisory project and the thesis.

Programme
The Master of Business in Energy systems (MBE) programme is a part-time programme designed to accommodate professionals who combine a job related to energy with post-graduate education. The curriculum takes about two years, which includes twelve three-day classroom sessions in Delft. More information about the practical planning of the programme can be found in the Dates and study load section.
The participants follow course modules, make assignments, perform an energy advisory project at a company and write and defend a final thesis. Including preparatory and follow-up exercises, the five modules are designed to allow the participants to explore all relevant topics in relation to their own professional context, guided by the module managers (Get to know them in the Key players section).

Use & efficiency module
What is energy used for in society, which energy systems are available and what is their efficiency? Participants perform a thorough analysis of the energy use and saving potential and learn to improve and manage energy use in an organisation.

Sources & systems module
What energy sources are used, what sustainable energy sources are in development and how do they work together in a sustainable energy system? What is the role of decentralized production and how to quantify the costs and benefits of different energy sources

Markets & policies module
What does the energy market look like and which transition is going on? The energy market is complex with different actors in a global, European and national environment. This module frames the complex regulatory and political environment and the impact of financial markets and tradable commodity markets on energy efficiency, renewable energy and emission reduction projects.

Business & strategy module
Making a business case and a strategy for a company requires a combination of operational management, forecasts of implications on an operational level and a clear view of all influences like permits and finance. In this module these aspects will be explained culminating in the design and implementation of an energy strategy for the participants home organisation.

Energy Advisory Project
The energy advisory project is an integral part of the programme. Working in groups, the participants tackle real-life energy problems at a host organisation and report their findings and solutions to its management. The project is carried out in co-operation with the department or service responsible for the working conditions at the host organisation. The advisory project aims to provide participants with the hands-on experience of working in a multidisciplinary group and with the opportunity to function in a context other than their own organisation.

Master Module
The Master module integrates all elements - technological, financial, markets, business - in the context of a rapidly changing and paradigm shifting energy system. The Master thesis will focus on solving a specific energy problem in a sustainable way. The thesis will need to be innovative and academic; the subject may be relevant to the participants organisation. Final examination consists of a presentation of the thesis and defending it against the examination board of specialists from universities and the energy business.

Candidates are admitted to the programme based on prior education, curriculum vitae and individual motivation.
