The PhD Programme is part of a portfolio of doctoral programmes within Newcastle Business School. The PhD Programme allows students to undertake an individual programme of research development that will enable original research to doctoral level in their chosen field of study. The Programme is designed to challenge students at the highest level of thought and to advance career opportunities through enhancing academic and professional development. 

The Programme aims to enable students to:

  • Develop research skills through a programme of in-depth study, personal and research development and scholarship in business and management.
  • Develop expertise in appropriate methods of research and enquiry.
  • Produce high-quality research outputs which demonstrate critical judgment and original contribution to knowledge.
  • Produce a research thesis (of approximately 80,000 words). 

Newcastle Business School research specialisms are grouped into research themes based on an established track record of publication and consultancy. Indicative examples of research areas are given for each theme:

  • Accounting and Financial Management, e.g. corporate philanthropy, criminal money laundering
  • Business Analysis, Systems and Information Management, e.g. culture and information systems, systems in the Public Sector, particularly the NHS
  • Logistics and Supply Chain Management, e.g. carbon management in supply chains, supplier relationships
  • Marketing, Travel and Tourism Management , e.g. brand management, consumer behaviour
  • Organisation and Human Resource Management, e.g. HRM and strategic HRM, reward management, absence management, gender and organisations
  • Strategic Management and International Business, e.g. strategic change, the internalisation of firms

The Newcastle Business School PhD Programme is structured around three years of active research, in full-time mode, and five years in part-time mode. Students will be required to pass through milestone targets in each year of study giving clear structure to the PhD Programme. These milestones include project approval and annual progression. The student will be supported in meeting milestone requirements through a programme of research training, development and supervisory support including:

A thesis supervisory team (including a specialist in chosen research field)

  • Annual Doctoral Conference
  • A research student counsellor
  • Graduate School online support system
  • Research student community
  • Research surgery
  • Doctoral Summer School

Requirements

  • At least an upper second class honours degree (UK) or equivalent from an overseas university, or a Masters degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Applicants who do not hold these qualifications must demonstrate equivalent intellectual competence possibly referenced by relevant experience to the satisfaction of the relevant University committee.
  • Where English is not the applicant’s first language, a minimum IELTS score of 7.0. (No individual element in your IELTS score should be 0.5 or more points below the required overall score). 
  • An initial research proposal giving details of the area of research in which they are interested
