Description

The BSc in Chemistry at Lincoln provides a stimulating and challenging learning experience in which students apply their chemical knowledge and understanding to solve real world problems within the chemical sciences. The BSc is an integrated programme of study in which underpinning concepts of chemistry are taught within a variety of chemical science topics. Topics such as drug development, nanochemistry, analytical measurement, forensic science, materials chemistry, environmental chemistry, chemical biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and nuclear chemistry will be covered.

At Lincoln, the ‘Student as Producer’ principles are incorporated into all programmes and encourage students to learn through generating new knowledge. This provides a challenging and stimulating learning experience in which all the core theoretical knowledge and understanding is acquired along with a greater appreciation of the role of chemistry in the developing world.

How You Study

The course includes lectures, seminars, laboratory-based practical classes and visits to specialist centres as well as lectures from visiting scientists.

Level 1 Students will establish a thorough knowledge and understanding of underpinning general chemical science along with acquiring essential laboratory skills and transferable skills needed to study chemistry at university level.

Level 2 Students will develop greater independence in their learning with opportunities to study chemical topics to greater depth. More advanced practical skills in the laboratory and the computer lab will be acquired.

Level 3 Students will build upon the general chemistry acquired at levels 1 and 2 allowing exploration of more in-depth specialist areas. Project based learning will be introduced.

Career Opportunities

Career prospects for chemists are excellent, both within the field and beyond, as the subject provides a thorough grounding in analytical methods, practical scientific and laboratory skills and research methods.

Chemists are to be found within the chemical industry, undertaking a variety of roles such as research and development, manufacturing and process control, and regulatory roles. There is a great demand for chemists in education, both higher and secondary and many chemists take post-graduate qualifications such as masters and postdoctoral studies.

Additionally, the transferable skills such as communications, problem solving and decision-making are valuable in many other spheres of employment. Strong mathematical and analytical skills put chemists in high demand in the financial services industry, including the City of London, sales and marketing, and management.

A degree in chemistry might lead to a job in one of the large enterprises in the chemical and pharmaceutical companies, but there are also many opportunities in a myriad of smaller biotechnology companies in the UK, Europe and even further afield.

Course Content

Student as Producer

Student as Producer is a development of the University of Lincoln's policy of research-informed teaching to research-engaged teaching. Research-engaged teaching involves more research and research-like activities at the core of the undergraduate curriculum. A significant amount of teaching at the University of Lincoln is already research-engaged.

Student as Producer will make research-engaged teaching an institutional priority, across all colleges and subject areas. In this way students become part of the academic project of the University and collaborators with academics in the production of knowledge and meaning. Research-engaged teaching is grounded in the intellectual history and tradition of the modern university.
