The MA Childhood Studies is an innovative, forward-looking course at the cutting-edge of Childhood Studies, centered around the 'new social study of childhood'.
The course takes a global and multi-disciplinary approach to the study of childhood and youth (0-18 year-old), drawing on perspectives from sociology, psychology, anthropology, history, philosophy, human geography and inclusive education. It is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of children and young peoples lives in a range of social and cultural (including educational) contexts, drawing on examples from across the world.
You will be taught by internationally renowned academics, including authors of key texts in the field of childhood. Your tutors will introduce you to the study of children and young people through a focus on current developments in academic thinking and in policy and practice.
The course is delivered through lectures, seminars and workshops and will include the use of media and digital technologies. It will also offer students the opportunity for reflexive personal study and active engagement with others in debate, analysis and critique.
The MA Childhood Studies programme has been designed to meet the needs of both international and UK students of childhood and youth, including practitioners, who intend to work, with children in educational, social, health or NGO settings. The MA will also enable you to pursue an academic career, for example doctoral study in Education, Social Policy, Sociology or Psychology.
The programme is taught collaboratively with colleagues based in the Centre for Research on Families, Lifecourse and Generations (FLaG), in the School of Sociology and Social Policy. FLaG is an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and research users interested in families, life course trajectories and transitions, and intergenerational relationships. It provides a wide range of seminars, workshops and research methods training events, many of which will be open to MA Childhood Studies students.
The MA Childhood Studies will provide you with an opportunity to explore * a holistic view of the lives, learning, development and care of children and young people;
* children and young people as social actors in everyday life:
* international perspectives on children and young people, family, community, social justice, citizenship, and culture;
* a focus on children and young peoples experiences, perspectives and agency;
* methodologies in research and consultations with children and young people;
* debate and analysis of multi- and interdisciplinary approaches to childhood studies in an global context;
* discussion of national and international policies and professional practice.

MA Childhood Studies will address the local contexts of childrens experiences, lives and learning in a culturally and economically globalising world. You will acquire a firm theoretical base in the new social study of childhood and come to understand a range of concepts, approaches and paradigms.
During the programme you will be able to apply various theoretical frameworks in the analysis of children and young peoples lives. You will also develop research skills and understanding in order to pursue academic or professional career goals within both national and international contexts.
Core modulesTheorizing Childhood and Youth introduces you to study of children and young people through a focus on key developments in academic thinking, policy and practice. You will draw on psychological, social, biological and cultural perspectives of childhood.
Research with Children and Young People provides you with the research skills and understanding needed to undertake research and consultations with children and young people in a range of settings.
Critical Study (including Dissertation) allows you to design and undertake a small-scale research project related to your own interests in the field of childhood studies.
Optional modulesYou will have to choose two optional modules during your MA study. At least one has to come from the following optional modules on the Childhood Studies Programme:
* On Screen, Off Screen: Childrens Creativity and Cultures;
* Children, Young People and Literacies; (will run in 2015/16)
* Children and Young Peoples Citizenship, Political Participation and Social Justice;
* Developmental Disorders in the Early Years;
Your second optional module may be chosen from the wide range of Masters modules available across the School of Education, the School of Sociology and Social Policy and other departments in the Faculty of Education, Social Sciences and Law.
For example, if you wish to pursue a career involving educational leadership or management you will be able to choose a module such as:
* Developing Leadership
* International Education Management: Effective Development of Policies and Plans for Change;
* International Education Management: Developing Financial and Material Resources
Or if you, for example, wish to pursue a career working with children with a disability or special educational needs you may wish to choose one of the options available on our specialist MA Special Educational Needs programme.
* Optional modules are subject to availability and timetable.
The programme provides you with a planned and structured learning experience. However, we wish to respond to the professional needs and personal interests that you have as a student, whatever your educational and professional aspirations. Whenever possible, we will endeavour to create a study pathway that meets your needs.
To coincide with the launch of this exciting new MA programme, the School is offering a scholarship worth 50% of the full-time international tuition fee for one student registering on the MA Childhood Studies to commence in September 2014.
