Description

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree programme enables each student to develop his or her own interests in business and related subjects. Students are able to create individualised courses using a range of papers offered across teaching departments in the School of Business and University as a whole. Students have the flexibility within the BCom degree to combine two specialisations and graduate with a double major.

Tourism is an interdisciplinary field of study that has links to business studies, resource analysis, social theory and environmental studies. The BCom majoring in Tourism degree helps students develop an understanding of the key issues surrounding tourism, its impact and ongoing management. Students are encouraged to take papers in other fields such as Commerce (e.g. Accounting, Management or Marketing) or Humanities (e.g. Anthropology, Geography, History, Languages, Maori Studies) depending on their interests and their intended career destination.

Course Content

Tourism at Otago gives you a management focus and also gives you wider exposure to social, cultural, environmental and economic issues relevant to this dynamic industry. Through our key pillars of Business and Governance, Society, and Environment you will gain a degree that employers value and will allow you to become a leader in your field. As a first year Tourism student you will study the global principles that structure tourism, the nature and operation of the tourism industry and the impact, development and management of issues that are constantly and inevitably arising in relation to the tourism industry. Alongside this, you will have the choice of one of two other papers focusing either on global tourism or hospitality. As you progress through your degree to the second year you will be studying different areas of tourism in more detail, including destination management, tourist behaviour and tourism and hospitality enterprise management, as well as having the option of including sport tourism and wine business into your degree.

At the 300-level you will able to choose papers that allow you to focus on your areas of interest and that will enhance your future career. Double major/degree options Tourism complements a range of other major and degree programmes such as Marketing Management, Management, Economics, Geography, Physical Education, Communication and Languages. Your options are endless!
