Description

The BSc programme in Computer Graphics combines the study of core computing science with specialist topics in computer graphics, introducing you to contemporary issues at the frontiers of computer graphics. The programme is also available as a four-year integrated Master's degree (MComp). Whether you follow the MComp or BSc programme, you will conduct an extended research project in computer graphics. The School of Computing Sciences has a strong research group in computer graphics and it would be expected that your research project utilises the cutting edge technology developed in the School.

Studying Computer Graphics at UEA will give you an in depth knowledge of both the foundations and the advanced techniques. Initially lectures will cover two and three dimensional graphics fundamentals coupled with practical exercises. Students will be able to exploit the techniques learnt through the development of two and three dimensional real-time simulations. Our academic faculty has strong links with industry and business, particularly with leading games companies, which enables the degree to provide you with the knowledge to solve real-world problems. Many of the projects and coursework that you will take part in use data or scenarios that come from real industry and business applications.

During the degree you will get first hand experience on topics such as real time simulation, rendering techniques, haptics (or force feedback), art content and collision detection. You will learn about graphics hardware (GPUs) which is evolving from fixed pipelines to more flexible programmable pipelines.
The course benefits from the expertise of research-active academic staff within the School of Computing Sciences in areas such as computer graphics, computer games development, speech and audio processing and computer vision. The degree has been accredited by the British Computing Society (BCS) which provides an external validation to ensure that the content of the degree is up to date and is organised and taught professionally. Additionally, the Urban Modelling Group (UMG) are based in the School of Computing Sciences and have vast experience in advanced modelling of buildings, large scale models, urban scenery and crowds.

Course Content

Year 1

The first year of the degree comprises a set of six compulsory subjects which give you the solid grounding in computing science that is necessary for moving into the second and third years.

In the first year, computer programming is studied and for this we teach Java. This is taught through a combination of lectures and laboratory classes which involve practical projects. The computing architectures module involves the programming of robotic vehicles to move around an obstacle course.

All of our computing degrees follow this same first year. We recognise that your interests and career aspirations may change during your first year and the fact that all our computing degrees follow this same first year gives you the flexibility to change to a different computing degree at the end of your first year if you so desire.

Year 2

The second year builds on the subjects studied in the first year and is divided into three areas - compulsory Computer Graphics and computing subjects, Computing options and free choice options.

The Computer Graphics subjects includes programming in C++ and OpenGL and covers fundamental 2D graphics theory. Data structures and algorithms are vital to many computing applications and this topic is covered in the second year.

Within the computing options, one subject may be chosen from a varied selection. The free choice option enables you to choose a subject from any School in the University, or alternatively another computing subject can be chosen. In practice about half of our students use the free choice to study more computing, while the other half choose something different. Examples of free choice subjects taken by students includes Entreprenurialism, an introduction to a foreign language, law, music, film and TV.

Year 3

The final year of the degree offers advanced units in Computer Graphics enabling you to deepen your knowledge in the field. You may also choose two additional units.

One third of the final year is spent on a project. The exact subject of the graphics project is chosen by the student, either from a list of projects provided by faculty or through a student's own idea for a project. This provides an excellent opportunity to further specialise in computer graphics. Example projects have included real-time lighting, realistic simulation of fluids, 3d graphics on the iPhone and visualizing virtual historic reconstructions.

There is also a free choice module which can be chosen from any School in the University. You may use this to study more computing or alternatively choose to study something completely different.

Students for whom English is a Foreign language

We welcome applications from students from all academic backgrounds. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading). Recognised English Language qualifications include:

  • IELTS: 6. overall (minimum 5.5 in any component)
  • TOEFL: Internet-based score of 78 overall (minimum 20 in Speaking component, 17 in Writing and Listening components and 18 in Reading components.
  • PTE: 55 overall (minimum 51 in any component).

If you do not meet the University's entry requirements, our INTO Language Learning Centre offers a range of university preparation courses to help you develop the high level of academic and English skills necessary for successful undergraduate study.

Interviews

The majority of candidates will not be called for an interview. However, for some students an interview will be requested. These are normally quite informal and generally cover topics such as your current studies, reasons for choosing the course and your personal interests and extra-curricular activities.

Gap Year

We welcome applications from students who have already taken or intend to take a gap year, believing that a year between school and university can be of substantial benefit. You are advised to indicate your reason for wishing to defer entry and may wish to contact the appropriate Admissions Office directly to discuss this further.

Special Entry Requirements

We ask our applicants to have at least one of the following A Levels (or equivalent): Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing, Electronics or Economics.
General Studies and Critical Thinking are not accepted.

The School's annual intake is in September of each year.

Pass the Access to HE Diploma with Distinction in 36 credits at Level 3 and Merit in 9 Level 3 credits, including 12 Level 3 credits in either Mathematics, Science or Economics related subjects.

GCSE Offer

Students are required to have Mathematics at minimum of Grade B and English Language at minimum of Grade C or above at GCSE Level.

Work Experience

No work experience is required.
