There is no fixed timetable for courses.
Part-time studies are possible.

Forms of assessment

Almost every course ends with an exam or a term paper/project. Credits are given only for successfully completed courses. The overall grade is the mean of all grades (90 ECTS) obtained during the course of study and the grade of the Master's thesis (30 credit points).

Course objectives

A deeper knowledge and insight into contemporary research issues in the chosen field of computer science; preparation for a PhD position; abilities to work and do research in international surroundings, whether in academia or industry

Language requirements

English proficiency is essential. Standardised test results (TOEFL, IELTS or CPE) are required.
Please note: English certification will be waived for students who received their Bachelor's degree from a university located in a country where English is the first official language.

Academic requirements

Bachelor's degree with a grade of at least 75%, i.e., within the top 10% of the class, completed online application form including the following:
  • CV
  • statement of purpose
  • complete transcripts of records
  • two references from professors or employers
  • English language certificate
  • GRE is highly recommended but not mandatory

Enrolment fees

Approx. 200 EUR per semester, including a semester ticket covering public transport in the Saarbrücken area

Costs of living

About 800 EUR per month to cover personal expenses (incl. accommodation)

Job opportunities

Jobs as tutors and research assistants are available in the department and cooperating institutes each semester. Openings are posted on bulletin boards and on our websites.

Funding opportunities within the university

The International Max Planck Research School for Computer Science has a limited number of full scholarships for the best international students.

Services and support for international students

Saarland University offers a special support and guidance service for our international students and visiting scholars. As well as welcoming new foreign students to the university, we organise excursions and cultural events where students and scholars from abroad can meet German students and colleagues. We also provide support in dealing with official and administrative matters. To encourage interaction between German and international students, the international office also runs a successful peer mentoring programme called "you and me".
