Description

The degree of Computing Science, Imaging and Multimedia allows you to combine an interest in video and sound processing with computing science. Throughout the course you will not only learn the computing science that underpins imaging and multimedia, but you will also the study modules in the areas of music, film and TV which provide a unique creative component to the degree.

The course benefits from the expertise of research-active academic staff within the School of Computing Sciences in areas such as computer graphics, computer games development, speech and audio processing and computer vision, as well as the skilful know-how from experts in professional film, video and TV production at the School of Film and Television Studies. In the first year you will be introduced to basic computing science subjects including programming in Java, alongside an introductory module in film and TV studies. The second and third years of the degree allow you to specialise in areas such as computer graphics, sound and image processing, film, TV and video production, and/or music processing. Our academic faculty has strong links with many related imaging and multimedia companies and we use these contacts to help us to shape the degree content as well as designing coursework projects around real-world problems.

In summary, this course is designed for applicants who wish to enter the film, media, games and entertainment industries whilst being well-equipped with modern day advanced computing science skills. The degree has been accredited by the British Computing Society (BCS) which provides an external validation to ensure that the content of the degree is up to date and is organised and taught professionally.

Course Content

Year 1

The first year of the degree comprises a set of five compulsory subjects which teach core elements of computing science and one module introducing fundamentals of Film and TV studies. One third of the first year is devoted to teaching programming using the Java programming language. All modules are taught through a combination of lectures and laboratory classes, the latter involving practical projects. The Film and TV module examines the current key debates in film studies through a combination of lectures, seminars and film screenings.

We recognise that your interests and career aspirations may change during your first year. Considering the fact that this degree course follows broadly our standard G400 computing degree course, there is the option to change to a different course at the end of your first year if you so desire.

Year 2

The second year builds on the subjects studied in the first year and allows you to choose modules according to your interests and career aspirations.
Computer Graphics, Sound and Image Processing, and Software Engineering are compulsory modules as to give you a good introduction to the fundamentals of imaging and multimedia processing. The other half of your modules is optional and you have the choice to pick film or music studies or a mix of both, whilst one module of choice needs to be a computing subject. The Video/TV production module involves filming in or outside, after which footage is processed in our film studio to render a finished product which can be used as a valuable asset to your portfolio for future reference. This is also the case for Music Composition modules.

Year 3

The final year of the degree allows you to develop the degree further towards your interests. Save for the compulsory project, all other modules are optional and follow on from the second year, with choices from more extensive Video/TV production projects, music composition projects, advanced sound and image processing, advanced computer graphics, etc.

Examples of final year imaging and multimedia projects include the virtual modelling of towns and cities, music processing and composition, automatic speech recognition, video processing and computer vision, motion capturing for video games, etc. There is also a free choice module which can be chosen from any School in the University. You may use this to study more computing, music or film, or alternatively choose to study something completely different.
