The one-year programme teaches you to relate globalising developments in practice, by undertaking an independent study of the ways in which large-scale developments tie into small-scale experiences of people all over the world and vice versa. The department mainly focuses on South-East Asia and sub-Sahara Africa. Nevertheless, you are not limited in your regional orientation and you will have the opportunity to focus your research on any other region. Fieldwork which is supervised in situ can be carried out in Mali, Gambia, Indonesia and the Netherlands. Individually organised fieldwork is possible in all other parts of the world. The programme offers three specialisations: Environment and Development, Global Connections, and Media and Material Culture.
