This programme is an interdisciplinary social sciences programme, which deals with key issues and problems of development as well as different theoretical perspectives to increase your understanding of the preconditions for and content of development. The objective of the programme is to provide you with the background knowledge and concrete skills to understand, assess and work in development-related fields, whether in direct poverty reduction or in other aspects of social and institutional development.

The programme in development studies will prepare you for PhD-studies as well as for a career in a role as policy maker, trainer or practitioner, in government agencies, private firms and NGOs.

After completing the Master of Science Programme in Development Studies, you will acquire a degree of Master of Science in Development Studies (120 credits), with a major in one of the following disciplines: Gender Studies, Development Studies, Human Geography, Education, Political Science, Social Work, Social Anthropology, Sociology, or Sociology of Law. The major corresponds to the major in the Bachelor's degree.

The medium of instruction is English. This means that lectures, seminars and examination will be in English.

Admission requirementsA Bachelor s degree with a major in one of the following social sciences disciplines: development studies, education, gender studies, human geography, political science, social work, social anthropology, sociology and sociology of law or equivalent. To be eligible for the programme students must also have a minimum average grade in their Bachelor s studies equivalent to 3.0 out of 4, in cumulated grade point average (CGPA), B in the American grading scale, or C in the ECTS or Swedish A-U grading scale. For the Swedish grading scale G-VG the minimum requirement is G. English 6/English Course B.Selection criteriabased on academic qualifications and a statement of purpose. Since this a multidisciplinary programme it is essential to attain an even distribution among different majors within the group. The number of admitted applicants from one major shall not exceed 30 % of all students admitted to the programme. Hence the applicant's major will be used as a selection criterion in case of many applicants from one major. The following disciplines are eligible as majors: Gender Studies, Development Studies, Human Geography, Education, Political Science, Social Work, Social Anthropology, Sociology and Sociology of Law. The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly qualified students across two categories:

Category 1: Students from the following 12 developing countries: Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. Category 2: Students with citizenship from countries on the DAC list (note there are some exceptions).
