Description

Dietetics is the education and practice of food, nutrition and wellness and offers a wide variety of jobs in the health promotion, wellness, nutrition care and foodservice administration areas. Registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) are provide nutrition counseling and are pivotal in preventive health care and community nutrition programs. Additionally, a registered dietitian is essential to the total care of a patient in a healthcare facility, giving nutritional guidance and instruction. Students develop an understanding and competency in food, nutrition, wellness, and management and a background in the basic and behavioral sciences to apply the science of nutrition for the promotion of health and disease prevention.

Dietetics offers a wide variety of jobs in hospitals, health promotion programs, nursing homes, public health agencies, industries, schools, universities, the armed services, and state, national and international organizations. A registered dietitian nutritionist must have a good background in the basic and behavioral sciences to apply the science of nutrition for the promotion of health and the prevention of disease.

Upon completion of the Bachelors of Science in Dietetics, students receive a verification statement from the program director and are eligible to apply for the supervised practice experience (dietetic internship)Students must apply to accredited dietetic internships. The internships are post-graduation, require additional fees, and are competitive. Upon completion of the accredited dietetic internship, the applicant is eligible to take the national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetics Registration to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

Students enrolled in the Didactic Program in Dietetics are assessed a discipline fee and e also required to have current immunizations and must complete a criminal background check.
