On December 6, 1967 the Consortium for the University of Reggio Calabria was established, which shortly would form a partnership with the counterpart consortium of catanzarese for the start of university studies in the two cities. In 1972 the Free University of Catanzaro was born. This was an institute promoted by the homonymous consortium, formed by the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, crafts and agriculture, the provincial Industrial Association, the provincial Merchants Union, the provincial federation direct cultivators, the Union cultural circle and the notarial College of the United districts of Catanzaro and Crotone. The establishment of this university was to be functional to the legal recognition by the state of an Autonomous University seat. The number of students enrolled in the first academic year 1972/73 was about five hundred and for the second year doubled. The faculties of law, teaching and political science were present. The autonomist intent of the Free University of Catanzaro, did not have the desired success and so it had to cease its activity in 1976, resulting in discomfort for about a thousand students of the time.

On January 18, 1979, by prefectural decree, the Consortium for the promotion of Culture and university studies of Catanzaro was established, aimed at stabilizing University settlements in the territory. Palazzo Bitonti was chosen as the headquarters of the consortium in Via San Brunone in Cologne. In 1982, the University of Reggio Calabria was founded, according to law 590/1982 which contemplates the establishment of two faculties in the regional capital of Calabria: medicine and surgery and jurisprudence. The teaching headquarters of these two faculties remained, until 2006, located in Via San Brunone in Cologne, in a wing of the Calabrian Theological Institute "San Pio X" in the Stadio district. The district also houses the Arnaldo Pugliese Civil Hospital. This health Garrison, was home to the first university clinics and houses the chairs and operational units of Pediatrics, gynecology and obstetrics and thoracic surgery.
The Faculty of Law of Catanzaro, belonging to the University of Reggio Calabria, shortly thereafter, activated a teaching pole in Reggio Calabria (seconded in 2001 to become the fourth reggina faculty) and a second pole in Cosenza (suppressed in the first two thousand years).

University Magna Graecia of Catanzaro is a non-profit public higher education institution located in the large town of Catanzaro, Calabria. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministero dell'Istruzione, dell'Università e della Ricerca, Italia (Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, Italy), Università degli Studi Magna Graecia di Catanzaro (UMG) is a medium-sized coeducational higher education institution. Università degli Studi Magna Graecia di Catanzaro (UMG) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees in several areas of study.
The formal system for accreditation of State University programs in Italy began in 1933. This law accredits a set of Universities, faculties, and courses. It involves two separate but correlated programs that were instituted at the same time: First, each University went through a four-step process to adopt and approve its own Regolamenti Didattici di Ateneo (RDA). The RDA establishes the rules for the organisation of teaching at the university, including establishing the requirements and objectives of each degree program, the curricula, credits awarded and requirements and objectives of examinations.
The RDA's were developed in consultation with representatives of the individual university, the regional coordinating committee (CRC), employers and the National University Council and are ultimately approved by the Ministry of Education (MIUR). Second, a series of formal, objective standards was adopted as minimum requirements for approval of any programs.
