The York Graduate School is one of the UK's top postgraduate education centres in economics and econometrics. Our staff are strongly committed to graduate work. Here at York you will be working in a friendly, supportive, international environment. A postgraduate qualification from York is respected everywhere.

We operate a flexible entry and exit system. Depending on your background you can begin in one of several ways. Also, we offer a Summer Session in Economics and Quantitative Skills which begins in late August and lasts for 5 weeks. You can take it as a free-standing course or you can use it to prepare for entry to a graduate school.

Postgraduate work in Economic and Social History is devoted essentially to research and the preparation of dissertations. Students may register for a minimum period of one year for an MSc, for two years for an MPhil or for three years for a PhD, assessed in each case by dissertation. The MPhil and PhD degrees may also be obtained by part-time study; the corresponding minimum periods of registration are four years and six years. Appropriate research training is provided during the first year of registration.

To be eligible for admission to the MSc students must have a first degree at good honours standard (ie at least second class, upper division, or its equivalent). The subject of the first degree must be appropriate to the intended subject of research and should normally include courses in economics and/or economic and social history. Students who wish to enter directly into the MPhil or PhD programmes should normally have completed a successful MSc course or equivalent.English Language RequirementsThe department's normal English language requirements, are (a) an IELTS result of 6.5 or (b) a TOEFL result of 600 if paper-based, 250 if CBT and 100 if iBT, or (c) A, B, and C Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English. For those applicants who have already achieved an IELTS 6.0 and only need a 0.5 increase to make their offers unconditional, the University has approved a limited system of admission through satisfactory completion of the English for Academic and Research Purposes course (EARP1). The course is offered by the Centre for English Language Teaching and after successful completion of it and upon passing the end-of-course test, students will enter the Department directly and they do not need to re-take IELTS at the end of August.
