The Master's programme in Human Rights Studies in Politics, Law and Society aims to prepare graduates with a first degree in the social and cultural sciences, communication and law a special interest in human rights for a career as an expert for human rights issues. Students will acquire skills in social science methods, legal argumentation, as well as regional and cultural variants of the concretisation of human rights and the meaning of human rights.

The Master's programme comprises ten modules that are spread over four semesters. During the first two semesters, students are introduced to the history and theoretical principles of human rights and human rights codifications as well as methods in social science and legal argumentation skills. Communication and a common understanding of human rights are other subjects taught in the first year of study before students undertake an xx-week work placement in an organisation involved with human rights issues. In the third semester, students can choose between three specialisation modules, each with a focus on work, business and diversity, migration or communication. In the fourth semester, a Master’s thesis is written on a research subject developed during the programme or relating to the work placement.

  • First degree in social sciences, cultural sciences, communication, the humanities or law, or related subjects
  • Good English language skills, certified according to standardised test formats such as TOEFL ibt (79) or pbT (550), IELTS (550), UNICERT III or CAE/CPE.
  • Applicants whose native language is not German must also have DSH-1 (B.2)-level language skills.

Semester contribution

The semester contribution of approx. 290 EUR entitles you, amongst other things, to use the regional and local public transport in the entire state of Hesse.

Costs of living

Approx. 800 EUR per month, including enrolment fee, rent and health insurance (110 EUR minimum per month), depending on one's living standard
