Why choose the Self-Designed specialization?

The Self-Designed (Mixed-Model) specialization offers educators who are interested in pursuing an area that is not among the specializations currently offered the chance to develop their own specialization with the approval of the faculty member. Students have developed self-designed specializations in curriculum areas, such as math education, science education, art or music education, and literacy, as well as in discipline areas, such as English-language learning and urban education.

Study outcomes

Graduates of this program will be prepared to:

Synthesize content knowledge, concepts, and principles.

Propose interventions based on the analysis of educational needs.

Design and conduct research that is grounded in theory and based on previous research.

Completion Requirements

• 96 total quarter credit hours
  • Foundational courses (12 cr.)
  • Core courses (24 cr.)
  • Specialized KAMs (24 cr.)
  • Research courses (16 cr.)
  • Proposal, dissertation, and oral presentations (20 cr.)
• Minimum 8-10 quarters enrollment
• Four Ph.D. residencies to equal a minimum of 16 units
• ePortfolio
