This degree covers everything from the operation of nanoelectronic devices to national-scale electricity networks. It is the broadest of our degrees, offering a wide choice of specialist modules.

In Stages 1 and 2 you study a common syllabus, with topics that help you understand electrical machines and electronic communications systems, such as semiconductor devices, electromagnetism and circuit theory.

In Stage 3 you continue to study a broad range of topics, exploring areas such as:

  • the design of machines and drives
  • industrial automation and robotics
  • semiconductor device fabrication

You also undertake a large individual design project, for example,developing low-cost ultrasound scanners.

Course Content

Our degrees are divided into Stages. Each Stage lasts for an academic year and you need to complete modules totalling 120 credits by the end of each Stage.

Requirements

All candidates are considered on an individual basis.

If your qualifications are not listed here, please see our additional entry requirements pages to find out which other qualifications are considered.

If you dont have the right mathematics and/or science qualifications for direct entry, please see our Foundation Year information below.

- A Levels

AAB-ABB including Mathematics and one other science subject (preferably physics) but excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

- Scottish Qualifications

BB at Advanced Higher including Mathematics and preferably Physics. Higher Physics required at Grade B if not offered at Advanced Higher.

- International Baccalaureate

A minimum of 35 points with Mathematics and Physics at Higher Level grade 5 or above.

- Irish Leaving Certificate

Candidates will normally only be considered for foundation year entry. Applications will be considered on an individual basis.

- Access Qualifications

In a relevant area of engineering or physical science. At least 20 level 3 credits in Mathematics at Distinction including differential and integral calculus. At least 25 level 3 credits in analytical engineering sciences (e.g. Mechanical or Electrical Science/Principles, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electronics etc), ten of which to be achieved at Distinction and the remainder at a minimum of Merit. Remaining credits preferred in Design, IT/CAD and other practical skill-based subjects.

- BTEC Level 5 HND

Overall Merit and Distinction grades with Distinctions in mathematics and science units. Units must include both Analytical Methods and Further Analytical Methods or equivalent. Students studying the HND outside the UK, and who have studied subjects corresponding in syllabus and level to Stage 1 of the degree and with Distinction in Mathematics and other engineering subjects, may be considered for Stage 2 entry.

- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (formerly BTEC National Diploma)

Overall DDD in an engineering discipline, to include Distinctions in Mathematics and analytical science units. All other candidates will be considered for Foundation Year entry.

- Cambridge Pre-U

D3,D3,M2-D3,M2,M2 in Principal Subjects including Mathematics and one other science subject (preferably physics). GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at a higher level.

- PARTNERS - A Levels

BBB-BBC including Mathematics and one other science subject (preferably physics) but excluding General Studies and Critical Thinking. GCSE Physics or Dual Award Science (minimum grade B) required if not offered at A or AS level.

- Foundation Year

If you dont have the right mathematics and/or science qualifications for direct entry, you can take an Electrical and Electronic Engineering foundation year:

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year BEng Honours (H604)
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year MEng Honours (H606)

This will provide you with the knowledge you need to progress to one of our three- or four-year Electrical and Electronic Engineering degrees.

- International Foundation Programmes

If you are an international student and you do not meet the academic and English language requirements specified above, you should consider a preparation course at INTO Newcastle University, which will help to prepare you for study on this degree course. INTO Newcastle University is based on the University campus and offers a range of courses including the International Foundation in Physical Sciences and Engineering.

For this degree you will need a minimum score of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
